Armor Releases AI Governance Framework to Address Critical Policy Gap as Enterprise AI Adoption Accelerates

DALLAS, January 28, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Armora leading provider of cloud-native solutions Managed Detection and Response (MDR) services protecting more than 1,700 organizations in 40 countries, today released guidance for businesses: Organizations that deploy artificial intelligence tools without formal governance policies create avoidable blind spots in their security posture and expose themselves to data loss, compliance violations, and emerging AI-specific threats.

    Armored Defense Logo

“If your organization is not actively developing and enforcing policies around the use of AI, you are already behind,” said Chris Stouff, chief security officer at Armor. “You need clear rules for data, tools and accountability before AI becomes a compliance and security liability. The result is a growing attack surface that traditional security controls were not designed to handle and a compliance responsibility that many organizations do not yet realize they are assuming. “The armor stands between you and the threat™ – and that includes AI governance.

The AI Governance Gap: Growing Operational Risk

As companies integrate AI tools into workflows ranging from customer service to software development, security teams face a critical challenge: establishing governance frameworks that balance innovation and risk management. According to Armor security experts, the most pressing concerns include:

Gaps in Data Loss Prevention: Employees enter sensitive corporate data, customer information, and proprietary code into public AI tools, often violating data processing policies and exposing intellectual property through channels that traditional DLP tools do not monitor.

Proliferation of Shadow AI: Unapproved AI tools are adopted across business units without visibility from the IT or security team, creating ungoverned data flows and potential compliance violations that only become apparent during audits or incidents.

GRC integration failures: AI use policies that exist in isolation rather than being integrated into existing governance, risk and compliance frameworks, leaving organizations unable to demonstrate AI governance to auditors, regulators or customers when asked.

Regulatory pressure: Emerging AI regulations across jurisdictions, including EU AI law and healthcare and financial services sector-specific requirements, which organizations are not prepared to meet.

Healthcare organizations face increased AI governance risks

The stakes are particularly high for healthcare organizations and HealthTech companies, where HIPAA compliance intersects with AI adoption. Policies must define what data can be used, where it can go, how the results are validated and who makes the decision. Protected health information inadvertently shared with AI tools can trigger breach assessment requirements, while AI-generated clinical documentation raises questions about accuracy, accountability, and regulatory compliance.

“Healthcare organizations are under enormous pressure to adopt AI in everything from administrative efficiency to clinical decision support,” Stouff added. “But the regulatory environment has not caught up and the safety implications are significant. Organizations need clear policies that specify what data can be used with which AI tools, how results are validated, and who is responsible if something goes wrong.

Armor AI Governance Framework: Five Pillars for Enterprise Security

To help organizations close AI governance gaps for transparency, accountability and results, Armor is publishing a framework built on five core pillars:

    1. Inventory and classification of AI tools: Identify all AI tools used in the organization, including sanctioned and shadow AI, and categorize them by risk level based on data access and business criticality.

    2. Data processing policies: Establish clear guidelines defining which categories of data can be used with which AI tools, with particular attention to personal information, personal health data, financial data and intellectual property.

    3. GRC integration: Integrate AI governance into existing compliance frameworks rather than treating it as a standalone initiative, ensuring audit readiness and regulatory alignment.

    4. Monitoring and detection: Implement technical controls to detect unauthorized use of AI tools and potential exfiltration of data to AI services, integrated with existing security monitoring.

    5. Training and empowerment of employees: Develop role-specific training that helps employees understand AI risks and responsibilities, with clear accountability structures for policy violations.
