Domino’s Pizza is working on replacing the traditional delivery person, with a new pilot of a robot courier going autonomous instead. While the pies and pepperoni may be the same, rather than a college kid in an old Prius it’ll be a Nuro R2 that handles transportation to your door. The pilot scheme has been in the pipeline for some time, in fact. Domino’s and Nuro announced their collaboration all the way back in June 2019, at the time saying that the trial should kick off later that year. Now, more a couple of years on, we’re finally seeing the…

Whispers of a new Chromebook with what could be a detachable OLED touchscreen and a significant uptick in connectivity and multimedia have emerged, promising a potential rival to Apple’s iPad Pro. The new Chrome OS detachable, codenamed Homestar, is expected to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7c rather than an Intel processor. Announced at the end of 2019, the Snapdragon 7c wasn’t Qualcomm’s first compute platform for notebooks and tablets. Instead it targeted mainstream models at more competitive prices, somewhere Chrome OS has proved traditionally strong, yet still delivering features like baked-in LTE connectivity and WiFi 802.11ac. Actually finding models based on…

Two satellites docking, while still in space, sounds like the plot of a sci-fi movie, but that’s just what Northrop Grumman has done to extend the lifespan of one of Intelsat’s TV satellites. IS-10-02 may not have an interesting name but it’s certainly important to Intelsat, being responsible for part of the company’s satellite TV service across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and South America. Problem is, satellites don’t last forever, but servicing them has traditionally been off the table. Providers are generally forced to launch a fresh satellite instead, which is both expensive and leaves more space junk to…

Our homes these days are riddled with cameras, from the ones in our phones and laptops to the more inconspicuous ones in security cameras inside and outside the house. Oftentimes, these cameras are designed to be invisible, utilitarian, and cold, even if they are sometimes used to communicate with a living being on the other end of the Internet line. Just as there have been attempts to make technology and devices feel more humane and human, a new experiment tries to make the humble webcam more relatable by turning it into a creepy eye that actually makes it feel more…

Amazon’s Echo Show 10 has seen a big price cut, with a new deal on the motorized smart display making it a much easier sell for your kitchen counter or desk. Announced late last year, the third generation of the Alexa-powered smart display mounts its 10-inch screen on a twisting speaker body. Thanks to a camera with person-tracking algorithms, it means the display can rotate on the spot to keep the user centered. That’s handy if you’re trying to read what’s on the screen – such as for following a recipe, checking out a weather forecast, or watching Amazon Video…

NVIDIA has revealed its newest chipset for smart cars and autonomous vehicles, with DRIVE Atlan promising to be “an AI data center on wheels” with an exponential uptick in processing power. Targeting Level 4 and Level 5 self-driving vehicles – along with the next-generation of highly-assisted cars – NVIDIA DRIVE Atlan is expected to begin sampling to automakers and AV developers as soon as 2023. It’s the industry’s first “1,000 TOPS SoC,” NVIDIA said at its GTC 2021 conference today, with Atlan comfortably out-performing its predecessors at the company too. NVIDIA DRIVE Orin – still yet to ship – for…

NVIDIA has given its “AI supercomputer on wheels” an upgrade, with the latest DRIVE Hyperion 8 getting as close to a turnkey self-driving car system as we’ve seen to date. It’s based on two of the DRIVE Orin SoCs – with a combined 508 TOPS of performance – along with a surfeit of sensors and AV software. Announced last year at GTC 2020, DRIVE Orin has until today been NVIDIA’s latest generation of chipset developed specifically for self-driving vehicles. Although the new DRIVE Atlan bests it on performance – it’s capable of 1,000 TOPS – that won’t even begin sampling…

A new Apple TV that would double as a FaceTime video calling camera and a smart speaker is reportedly in the works, potentially giving the company’s home entertainment and smart home offering a significant boost. The current Apple TV 4K is generally considered to be long-overdue a replacement, having been initially released all the way back in 2017. Since then we’ve seen updates to tvOS, the software that Apple TV runs, but no hardware improvements. Elsewhere in the home, meanwhile, Apple’s ambitions have met with mixed results. Its HomePod smart speaker was recently discontinued – Apple has never confirmed exact…

Google developed its Digital Wellbeing suite to try and break what many are considering addictive behaviors in the use of mobile devices. Time limits and reminders all work to help Android users develop mindfulness habits, but most of those practices are often associated when you’re at home or at work, mostly while sitting down. There is, however, one kind of mindfulness that is even more critical, and the new “Heads Up” feature is designed precisely when you’re not sitting around while using your phone. Unlike computers and TVs, smartphones haven’t kept people glued to their chairs or couches. Unfortunately, they…

Crestron has added a new smart thermostat to its connected home range, with the Crestron Horizon Thermostat promising touchscreen convenience along with remote sensors as it takes on Nest and others. Although designed to integrate with a Crestron Home smart home system, the Horizon will also work as a standalone WiFi thermostat. On the front there’s a 3.5-inch 320 x 480 color touchscreen, along with backlit capacitive buttons. Below that is a color-changing status bar, which indicates what mode the HVAC system is operating in, so that you don’t need to be up-close to see if the heating or cooling…
