According to Professor Tran Binh Giang, the director of Viet Duc University Hospital, this is a simultaneous transplant of two organs for one patient, making it an extremely challenging and complex procedure. Only four successful double organ transplants for patients have taken place in Vietnam.
The successful heart-kidney transplant confirms a new development of Vietnamese organ transplants.
Mr. TTQ (aged 37, Gia Lai Province) with dilated cardiomyopathy, heart failure and severe arrhythmia leading to end stage renal failure, is the patient who underwent a successful heart-kidney transplant this time. He has been on continuous hemodialysis for the past 5-6 years.
After careful consideration, the Viet Duc University Hospital expert committee decided to recommend both heart and kidney transplants by mid-2022 for patients receiving donated organs from brain-dead donors.
Patient Q was lucky in early February 2023 when a patient with brain death from a severe traumatic brain injury agreed to donate many organs to help in other dangerous situations.
The historic transplant was supervised by the director of the hospital with the help of other specialized teams. The transplant lasted 10 hours, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Everything that happened during the process was completely in line with the well-planned steps.
The patient’s postoperative course was quite challenging in terms of kidney and heart transplant function, but the surgeons had anticipated and planned for these developments.
Ten days after the transplant, the transplanted patient’s heart and kidney functions are almost back to normal. Without specialized cardiovascular and respiratory assistance, the patient was able to sit upright, eat, and speak. After an organ transplant, the patient receives additional care for a number of weeks according to standard guidelines.
The demand for organ transplants always exceeds the supply of available organs, said Prof. Nguyen Quang Nghia, head of the organ transplant center at Viet Duc University Hospital. 80% of patients around the world cannot afford to wait for a donated organ to become available.
