TasteAtlas, a platform that bills itself as a global atlas of authentic eateries, traditional dishes and local ingredients, recently unveiled a ranking of “The World’s 50 Best Street Foods,” with Vietnam’s banh mi securing sixth spot on the list.
Banh mi is a popular Vietnamese sandwich with a typical baguette filled with meats, pâté and vegetables. The sandwich ingredients and recipes vary depending on the region and locality.
According to TasteAtlas, the earliest versions of banh mi in Vietnam consisted of bread, meat and seasonings, with no added vegetables. Today, however, the sandwich can be found with a wide variety of toppings, such as French butter, fresh mayonnaise, liver pâté, cucumbers, cilantro, pickles, oyster sauce, and garlic.

TasteAtlas describes that “the bread should be light, with a delicate crust and a soft, chewy and tender interior with a slightly sweet taste.”
Guotie, a deep-fried variation of Chinese jiaozi dumplings, topped TasteAtlas’ list, while Malaysia’s Roti Canai, a deep-fried flatbread made with flour, water, eggs, and fat, and Mexico’s Tacos, a thin, flat baking sheet of fried tortilla topped with different fillings, took second and third place respectively.
With a catalog of more than 10,000 food and beverage outlets from around the world, TasteAtlas is regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious traditional food guidance websites, with its recipes appreciated by food critics and journalists alike.
