According to the World Economic Forum (WEF) Global Tourism Development Capability Index Report 2021, Vietnam tourism has 6 pillar indices that rank among the top group in the world.
The 2021 WEF report assesses and ranks 117 economies based on measuring 17 pillar indices with 112 sub-indices classified into 5 groups, including business environment, tourism policy and facilitation, infrastructure, tourism demand driver and sustainability of tourism.
Overall, the WEF report ranks Vietnam tourism at 52/117 of the global economy, up 8 places from 2019. This is the third highest increase in the world, after Indonesia (12 places up) and Saudi Arabia (up 10 places). †
Out of the 17 pillar indices, Vietnam’s tourism has 6 indices that rank among the top in the world (ranked 1-35), including Price Competitiveness (ranked 15), Natural Resources (ranked 24), Cultural Resources (ranked 25), Aviation Infrastructure (ranked 27), non-recreational resources (ranked 29), safety and security (ranked 33).

This is a groundbreaking progress of the tourism industry compared to the assessment period of 2019, when Vietnam has only 3 indicators classified in this group: price competitiveness, natural resources and cultural resources.
In addition, Vietnam also has 7 pillar indices ranked in the upper middle class of the world, including business environment, human and labor market, land and port infrastructure, information and communication technology readiness level, socioeconomic resilience, pressure and impact of tourism demand, degree of international openness.
Thus, of the 17 pillar indices, Vietnam has 13 indices classified from the middle to the highest group in the world.
In which the indices that rose the most, such as the business environment, rose 30 places; human resources and labor market increased by 27 levels, price competitiveness increased by 20 levels, safety and security increased by 16 levels, land infrastructure and ports increased by 15 steps.
These are the main driving forces that helped Vietnam move up 8 places compared to 2019, ranked in the 3 countries with the best improvement in the world.
However, in addition to the ranking indicators, tourism in Vietnam has a number of declining indicators such as information and communication technology readiness, tourism service infrastructure, priority for tourism, and environmental sustainability.
Also in the WEF report are the 4 lowest ranked indicators of tourism in Vietnam: health and hygiene, tourism service infrastructure, priority for the tourism industry, environmental sustainability.
