Vietnam is becoming a new production base for mobile phones as its share of global consumption demand continues to increase.

According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam produced 19 million mobile phones in September alone, a slight increase from the 18.9 million units registered in August. While phone production fell 5.8% over the same period last year, cell phone component production increased 17.3%.
For example, after the first 9 months of the year, Vietnam has produced a total of 158 million mobile phones and exported them to many important markets.
In the same period, industrial value added in general increased by 9.63% compared to the same period last year. In which the manufacturing sector grew by 10.69% (+7.85% in the first quarter; 11.07% in the second quarter; 13.02% in the third quarter) contributing 2.74 percentage points to the increase of the total added value of the economy as a whole.
According to the import and export report, domestic phone production reached 233.7 million units in 2021, an increase of 7.6% from the previous year. The production value of telephone components reached VND 580,800 billion, an increase of 29.5% over the same period in 2020.
Compared to the worldwide sales of 1.39 billion mobile phones consumed by Counterpoint Research in 2021, the production of telephones produced in Vietnam accounts for almost 17%.
In 2021, Vietnam’s export turnover of telephones and components will reach USD 57.5 billion, an increase of 12.4% compared to 2020 and accounting for 17.1% of the total export turnover of goods for the whole year. However, the export turnover of this product from the FDI sector reached more than USD 56.9 billion, an increase of 13.8% compared to 2020 and accounting for almost 99.0% of the total export turnover of telephones and components of the entire country. country.
In April, the General Statistical Office found that Vietnam’s electronics, computers and components group is still at an early stage in the production chain of electronic products and is largely dependent on foreign-invested companies. Products of Vietnamese enterprises are not strongly focused on deep processing, have not developed export products with advanced technology and gray matter, and the proportion of high-value-added products processed and manufactured is still low.
The main export markets for phones and components are the US, EU, China, UAE and South Korea. Notably, Vietnam also became Samsung’s largest phone producer, accounting for 60% of the group’s total global sales.
