Fact-checking content has become a priority for most social media companies, and TikTok is now rolling out a new prompting system that will alert you when you’re about to share “unsubstantiated content” with your friends. These prompts will appear on video content that TikTok PolitiFact, Lead Stories, and SciVerify fact-checking web platforms cannot confirm. TikTok explains that this feature will be especially useful as events unfold before fact-checkers deliver their final opinion.

New prompts “uncorroborated content”
When you try to re-share a video with content deemed unfounded, a gray warning prompt will appear at the top of their screen. You can still share the video, but TikTok explains that the purpose of these prompts is to make you think twice before you do so. The content creator will also receive a warning from TikTok if their content is flagged as unverified and those videos will not be allowed on the For You feed – the app’s landing page.
If a viewer attempts to share the flagged video, they will see a prompt reminding them that the video has been flagged as unverified content. This extra step requires a pause for users to think about their next move before choosing to “cancel” or “share anyway”.
Based on beta testing of the new warning feature, TikTok claims users shared 24% less misleading content while likes on reported videos declined by around 7% on average. The new functionality is already available in the United States and Canada and will be gradually rolled out to other regions over the coming weeks.
