Several vendors are rushing to add AI as a key feature in their software. Discord’s productivity rival Slack has also announced an AI-powered chatbot, and Google and Microsoft have already launched or are planning their own AI-powered search. Discord now joins the ranks. Discord may already be in the lead by being the only platform that can use the Midjourney AI art generator, but partly as Midjourney CEO David Holz explains, Midjourney, which is self-funded by the CEO, is UI Partly because I couldn’t afford to invest in a social media template.
On the 9th (local time), Discord announced that it would launch its own chatbot, Clyde, upgraded with ChatGPT technology. According to Prachi Gupta, Discord’s vice president of engineering, Clyde will expand its functionality to include not only direct messages, but also public and private channels, as well as the entire site. The refreshed Clyde will be available on select servers next week for public testing.
Gupta posted a video showing how to use Clyde. In text chat, typing @clyde opens a small text prompt button. Here you can summon Clyde into the conversation by asking him a question. Since Clyde has access to Discord’s tools, he also suggests GIFs and emojis. Channel admins can also mute Clyde.

ChatGPT is also used to improve AutoMod, a feature that automatically manages content. Using ChatGPT technology, Automode can interpret/apply various rules defined by administrators for multiple servers and groups. During a demonstration, Gupta flagged posts promoting other social media channels in a hamster-only group (a practice prohibited by the group’s rules) and found intentional misspellings.
However, there are cases where simple filtering is not enough. AI-based automode can also be seen as a tool for managing human intentions. “A question about ‘the leading cause of death in hamsters,’ for example, is different from a malicious user’s intent to say ‘hamster death,'” Gupta explained.

The updated Clyde summarizes chats in a sidebar called Conversation Summary. The conversation digest feature is similar to OtterPilot from Otter.ai. OtterPilot is a new feature in Otter’s transcription tool that records, summarizes, and annotates conversations with links. ChatGPT categorizes individual conversations by topic, and the new Conversation Summary feature does a similar job, marking where conversation topics change.
Generative AI features are also being introduced in Discord. You can “remix” your avatar using AI art to add a mustache, party hat, or other element. Moreover, it can be reconstructed into a new image based on the image or photo provided by the user.

According to Jason Citron, CEO of Discord, Discord has 150 million monthly active users. “Right now, we are witnessing the most exciting moment in the rise of technology,” Citron said. “This technology has the power and potential to change the way people communicate, express their creativity and enjoy life,” he said. That’s why Discord is home to AI experiments.
