In November 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT to the public. ChatGPT took the world by storm, surpassing 100 million users within two months of its launch. This is the shortest record in the app’s history. TikTok and Instagram took nine months and two and a half years respectively to reach 100 million. Issues with ChatGPT, content using ChatGPT, and services using ChatGPT are also increasing daily.
In the meantime, AI technology has been near and far. Although it has been used to trade multi-billion dollar stocks, conduct genetic research, and conduct national intelligence operations, AI has remained an abstract entity for ordinary users. But with the advent of ChatGPT, where you can write poetry, write code, and brainstorm ideas, AI has come closer to life. In other words, ChatGPT ushered in the popularization era of AI service.
Twenty years ago, according to Prefley, there was another smart tool that worked like magic. It’s just a Google search. Google Search is also powered by artificial intelligence. Based on Google research, parent company Alphabet has become the fourth US IT company to exceed $1 trillion in market capitalization, after Apple, Microsoft and Amazon.
Prepley conducted a test comparing the responsiveness of Google and ChatGPT. 40 questions carefully selected by experts were asked and the response performance of each RN was evaluated. The questions covered a variety of topics and were categorized as basic/intermediate/advanced based on difficulty. A panel of experts evaluated the responses based on 12 criteria: usability, clarity, completeness, conciseness, context, detail, effectiveness, functionality and fairness.
Here are some of the basic, intermediate and advanced level questions and answers. Additionally, we reviewed the recently announced GPT-4 response. If there is a significant difference from the previous version, an explanation is provided.
Core question: Google search engine wins 7-4

Q. How to tie (Google wins)
The Google search engine provided more useful video information than text when asked “how to tie a tie”. ChatGPT-4 also only provides text explanations, but while the previous version only taught the basics, the latest version provides more detailed information, such as showing how to tie a Windsor tie.

Q. Is Santa Claus real? (ChatGPT wins)
To this question, ChatGPT answered “person who does not actually exist”, while Google search answered “real person”. Of course, to be specific, Google search also says “Saint Nicholas is a real person who made today’s Santa”, but it was ChatGPT that gave a more specific answer to the question.

Intermediate question: ChatGPT overwhelming victory by 15 against 6

Q. What are the best shoes for running? (Google wins)
Google search wins by showing real products and relevant content links that users might want to check out. ChatGPT, on the other hand, lost because it described features but did not present actionable content. ChatGPT-4 stands out for its more deliberate approach than previous versions. “The best running shoe is a very subjective thing,” he said, recommending “to wear the shoes and run.”

Q. How can I improve my credit rating? (ChatGPT wins)
ChatGPT stated that there is no quick way to increase your credit score and advised that it is important to practice and manage the introduced methods. On the other hand, a Google search showed ads for credit companies and content that could boost credit scores “quickly”.

Advanced level question: Win ChatGPT by a narrow margin of 4 to 3

Q. How do I earn money? (ChatGPT wins)
It was the same as when I asked how to improve my credit score in the mid-level question. While ChatGPT provides more thoughtful and contextual information, a Google search lists advertised content claiming to make money “quickly, easily, instantly”. In ChatGPT-4, methods such as platform usage (e.g. gig economy), blog operation, and writing were also suggested.

Q. Is God real? (ChatGPT wins)
To the philosophical question “Does God exist?” ChatGPT presented various views and arguments, saying “It depends on beliefs or positions.” On the other hand, Google search simply showed ads or content from religious groups.

conclusion
In the end, ChatGPT won with a record of 23 wins, 1 draw and 16 losses. I thought ChatGPT with the latest technology would win outright, but that wasn’t necessarily the case. Google also had its own weapon. The fact that it provides not only text information but also photo and video information, that even if you have to google it, the information is vast and you can click and buy it right away. With the advent of ChatGPT, Google is said to be in crisis, but it is judged that ChatGPT has its own role and function as ChatGPT and Google as Google. According to Prefley, the key findings are:
– Google was superior to ChatGPT in real-time information accessibility. Indeed, ChatGPT only trained on data collected through June 2021. But the gap is not serious, Prefley said, because ChatGPT will soon have access to real-time information as well.
– Google provided more comprehensive information than ChatGPT. For example, just search “ChatGPT” on Google search engine to access more than 78 million resources in 0.35 seconds, all of which are instantly clickable.
– There is also a problem with Google’s “buffet” question-and-answer method. First of all, it’s annoying because there is too much advertising content including “real” information. It also takes time to determine what information is most relevant. For example, what if you ask a question about healthcare and the first result is an advertisement for a hospital, and the next two results are also websites filled with advertisements? This can hamper the overall user experience and cause confusion.
– ChatGPT’s responses are wise and mature, like “a conversation with a trusted teacher”, Prepley analyzes.
– ChatGPT provided multiple perspectives and contexts, almost always in a cautious tone. In the GPT-4, this aspect has been further enhanced. In the Google search engine, it can be said that the parts that users need to find and organize themselves are organized and presented in ChatGPT at the same time. Google search results, on the other hand, displayed ads to get attention, sometimes at the expense of the truth.
– ChatGPT behaved as if it was a separate entity from the Google search engine. This means that he has learned the human way of thinking, but acts as if he is an artist himself.
So what does ChatGPT think of these results? “I just found out which is smarter, ChatGPT or Google,” Prefley told ChatGPT. ChatGPT won. Would you like to say something? the results are as follows.
“As a language model, ChatGPT is designed to understand and generate text based on the data it is trained on. Factors such as the ability to understand and respond to natural language or the speed and accuracy of providing information may have been considered in the study. However, Google is a search engine that can quickly provide answers to a wide range of questions by accessing large amounts of information. And keep in mind that ChatGPT is a language model that can generate human-like text based on input. Direct comparison is difficult as both have their own strengths and limitations. We are constantly learning and updating our knowledge to improve the quality of the answers we provide. »
