BANGKOK, THAILAND – Media OutReach Newswire – February 27, 2024 – The Office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), as Thailand’s leading corruption prevention and enforcement agency, announced that it will seriously adopt the standard ISO 37001 to fight corruption, which involves giving and receiving bribes in today’s digital age.
The NACC said corruption issues pose a serious threat and affect every country in the world. This disrupts economic systems and creates challenges and obstacles for many countries. According to the World Bank, corruption accounts for up to $1 trillion per year, equivalent to 3% of global GDP. As such, ISO is both an independent organization and an international non-governmental organization, whose mission is to establish international standards. This is why the ISO 37001 anti-corruption management system or ABMS was developed by ISO. ISO 37001 is the international standard for a management system designed to prevent the giving and receiving of bribes. This anti-corruption management guideline applies to all types or sizes of organizations, including those in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Each country can use it as a guide to voluntarily adopt and implement these standards at the national level.
ISO 37001 is internationally recognized as an instrument for corporate compliance programs and as a powerful internal control measure to prevent corporate corruption. Many countries have implemented national regulations to encourage and promote the adoption of ISO 37001 in the private and public sectors.
The NACC amended the Organic Anti-Corruption Law, BE 2561 (2018), by including a provision that imposes criminal sanctions for cases of corruption of legal entities. This amendment studied the best practices of foreign countries and also studied or adopted the principle of the ISO 37001 standard taking into account in the drafting of article 176 of the law, which made it possible to ensure consistency with the principle and the practice of the ISO 37001 standard. With the aim of concrete mobilization and conscious awareness of Article 176, the NACC established the Anti-Corruption Advisory Service (ABAS) to concretely lead the fight against corruption . ABAS is a center that collects and disseminates various knowledge and provides recommendations to prevent corruption problems in business sectors. In this regard, the NACC provides “Guidelines on Appropriate Internal Control Measures for Legal Entities”, which aligns with ISO 37001.
