    HONG KONG SAR – OutReach Media – October 28, 2023 –
Quantity Survey Division of the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS) hosted the 2023 HKIS Quantity Surveying Division Conference (the Conference) at the Royal Plaza Hotel today.

Theme “Mapping the future of the built environment: the roles of quantity surveyors“This year the conference brought together over 240 professionals, practitioners and academics from government departments, statutory bodies, the private sector and academia to share experience and exchange ideas on the latest developments and challenges for quantity surveyors in the built environment.
Ms. Winnie HO Wing Yin, JP, Housing Secretary of the HKSAR Government, was present as the guest of honor and delivered an opening speech.

The Quantity Survey Division is one of the six divisions of the HKIS and has the largest number of members. The division has adhered to the spirit of excellence for many years. This is attributed to the fact that members have been trained as construction cost consultants, giving them specialist knowledge of construction costs, values, finances, contractual arrangements and legal issues in the construction discipline.

With the increasing demand for labor and professionals in the construction industry and advancements in technology, the role of quantity surveyors has taken on new dimensions, going far beyond the traditional confines of cost estimation and project management.

Ms. Winnie HO Wing Yin, JP, Housing Secretary of the HKSAR Governmentmentioned in his opening speech: “As Hong Kong experiences an increase in development demands, stakeholders in the construction sector, including government ministries, consulting firms and construction companies, should seize this golden opportunity to harness advances in innovation and technology for a better future. With HKIS QSD as a key partner in the surveying trade, enabling the industry to continually excel towards the wellbeing of the built environment in Hong Kong.

Featuring eight renowned speakers, this conference explored emerging trends and perspectives in the quantitative measurement industry from a comprehensive and professional perspective, such as digitalization, decarbonization and sustainability, procurement and contracting strategies, and construction disputes and dispute resolution. This sparked proactive discussions and exchange of ideas among participants.

The conference aims to inspire industry stakeholders to seize opportunities and delve into the evolving role of quantity surveyors in shaping the future of the built environment.

Sr Paul WONG Kwok Leung, President of the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors, noted in his welcome speech: “In this new, rapidly evolving era, quantity surveyors play a vital role in guiding the development trajectory and ensuring the seamless integration of innovation, efficiency and responsible practices. I believe that through our concerted efforts, the surveying profession in Hong Kong will continue to flourish.

Sr Sunny CHOI Shing Lam, Chairman of the Quantity Survey Division of the HKIS, mentioned the importance of exchange of ideas between different generations in his opening speech: “This conference invited young surveyors as moderators to foster a dynamic exchange of ideas. We aspire to inspire more young talents to join the quantity surveying profession and contribute to its growth.

Sr Amelia FOK Ching Yin, President of the Conference Organizing Committee said in his closing remarks: “Through this conference, we aspire to equip our fellows with well-rounded skills and knowledge, thereby strengthening their professional skills and propelling the advancement of our industry.
