Ningde, China,, March 20, 2025 / Prnewswire / – CATL and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation have announced an agreement to accelerate the development of a circular economy for batteries, CATL becoming a strategic partner and the first leader in renewable technologies, in the foundation network.
For the future, CATL will work towards a global commitment of energy circularity and will collaborate with the Foundation to identify the opportunity of the circular economy for the entire battery value chain, and build an ecosystem of inter-industrial partners to develop and implement a plan for battery circularity.
While the industry has long recognized the need to go beyond an approach to “waste to be taken”, the translation of commitment in reality is complex. The CATL expertise will bring to the strategic partnership will be the key to establishing a truly circular battery industry.
“This strategic partnership represents a major step in our shared vision of a sustainable energy future,” said Sand songCatl’s Global Leader for the circular economy. “By combining our knowledge and innovation skills in the battery industry with the leadership of the foundation in the circular economy, we are well placed to create a truly circular battery ecosystem. It is not only about environmental responsibility – it is a question of conducting innovation and building a system that benefits industries and communities all over the world.”
“The rapid growth of renewable energies and electrification offers a unique chance to build circular value chains from zero. Joe MurphyExecutive Lead, Network, Ellen MacArthur Foundation. “As the world’s leading producer of batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems, CATL’s expertise will be essential to establish a truly circular battery industry and lead the circular economy of the broader energy transition.”
Express themselves during the annual network event of the Foundation in Amsterdam, Netherlands,, Dennis PanCatl’s head of sustainability, stressed the critical importance of battery design thinking about recyclability. CATL has adopted a zero-carbon strategy to prioritize the use of reusable and renewable materials and facilitate recycling. In 2024, CATL recycled around 130,000 tonnes of used batteries to produce 17,000 tonnes of lithium salt.
