Cape Town, South Africa,, March 1, 2025 / Prnewswire / – Acceleration of climate change and a global health system increasingly challenged, A new report From the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) redefines our way of thinking, investing and building systems to protect human health. Without new approaches, the changes induced by humans in climate nature and biodiversity threaten to undermine decades of progress in global health.

“Investment in human health is an investment in our future – growth communities, resilient livelihoods and sustainable prosperity,” said AIIB president Jin Liquun. “Planetary and human health is inseparable. At AIIB, we are committed to ensuring that infrastructure acts as a catalyst for better results for health and environmental resilience. By increasing investments in infrastructure for planetary health, we can break the cycle of environmental degradation and the decrease in health.”

AIIB launched the 2025 Asian infrastructure financing report, entitled “Infrastructure for Planetary Health”, during the fifth edition of the Finance in Common summit (FICS) Cape Town, South Africa.

Based on data and case studies from around the world, the report covers examples of how infrastructure development can improve public health results. These include measures to control air pollution and mitigate the impact of water -based and vectors, such as malaria and dengue, in developing economies thanks to the investment of infrastructure.

Chief economist of AIIB Erik Berglof said the concept of planetary health infrastructure arrives at a pivotal moment: “Changes made to climate, nature and biodiversity have a catastrophic impact on human health and well-being. Currently, a quarter of global deaths per year can be attributed to avoidable environmental factors. Planetary health infrastructure.

The report describes three key investment themes that financiers can adopt to achieve this concept:

    • Invest in an accessible, green and resilient health infrastructure. The increase in accessibility and climatic resilience of health care would maintain effective operations during extreme disasters and weather events and adapt to changes in diseases due to climate change and nature degradation.
    • Intensify green infrastructure and opt for a “health-infrastructure” approach. The reduction of dependence on fossil fuels, supported by renewable energies and adequate transmission, reduces exposure to the population to air pollution.
    • Invest in nature -based solutions. Nature-based approaches in infrastructure or investing directly in nature provide multiple health and well-being advantages. Well -functional ecosystems provide clean air and water, food, drugs and protection against extreme weather events.

“The global health landscape has evolved, as is our response. All infrastructure – whether energy, transport, water or digital – should be guided by the health impact. Multilateral development banks must carry out their competition power to support investors to identify and mobilize the necessary funding for new infrastructures for planetary health”, added to Berglof.

The integration of health, attenuation and adaptation of the climate, solutions based on nature and conservation in investments is already a key priority to the bank and constitutes a key element of its Climate action plan (CAP) and an inaugural health strategy, which has been launched in December 2024. As part of the CAP, AIIB has reported its intention to focus on solutions that simultaneously reduce climate change, strengthen resilience, improve adaptation and offer co-variations for biodiversity and nature conservation. While the health strategy provides a roadmap to meet health challenges between members and highlight AIIB’s commitment to social development and inclusion by allowing it to help improve health results in health Asia and beyond. Aiib a funded 22 health projects with an approved value of USD 4.87 billion.
