BANGKOK, THAILAND – Media OutReach – September 22, 2023 – Thai Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) Director General Ronnarong Phoolpipat chaired a trilateral meeting with Thailand’s Export Control and Border Security (EXBS) program U.S. Embassy and the European Union (EU) Partner for Partnership Program (EUP2P) on September 21, 2023, at the Department of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce, Thailand.

Representatives from both programs highlighted the importance of implementing strategic trade control measures (STC) to regulate weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and dual-use items (DUI) through licensing measures .
Director General Ronnarong Phoolpipat believes that this concept is necessary in principle, with the aim of preserving trade security within the global community. The meeting included an exchange of ideas and perspectives and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of implementing STC in Thailand.
Weapons of mass destruction refer to nuclear weapons, biological weapons, chemical weapons or any other weapons that have the potential to harm large numbers of human, animal or plant lives, and cause serious damage to environment.
A dual-use item can be used for both civilian and military purposes and could be used to develop, manufacture, apply, modify, store or transport WMD or could be processed in any way to facilitate the acquisition of WMD .
Ronnarong Phoolpipat said Thailand places strong emphasis on transparent business practices that prioritize security without leading to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, thereby strengthening the confidence of other countries in its commitment to global responsibility.
Thailand is committed to ensuring that its exports have no links or associations with terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.
