WUZHONG, China, January 3, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Situated along the Yellow River, Ningxia Wuzhong City is a vital ecological corridor, presenting significant challenges in harmonizing avian activity with power grid development. To solve this problem, the State Grid Wuzhong Power Supply Company has formulated a comprehensive strategy titled “Protecting Birds to Safeguard Power Lines”, which highlights the principles of “wisdom, research, integration and innovation”.
This strategy includes four key elements: (1) conducting in-depth surveys and research in collaboration with ornithological societies to establish an information think tank; (2) install bird protection devices to create safe habitats for avifauna; (3) form a volunteer service team and mobilize community resources to fulfill their responsibilities and obligations; and (4) foster innovation in the research and development of isolated bypass lines, thereby successfully transitioning from a deterrence-based approach to a protection-oriented approach.
Since the implementation of this initiative, the first 110kV ecological bird protection demonstration line has been established in Ningxia. This success resulted in “zero tripping” incidents while saving 1.2 million yuan in bird prevention costs and the rescue of 158 birds. The insulated bypass line was also listed on State Grid’s e-commerce platform to promote its transformation results, producing an output value of 3 million yuan. In recognition of its impact, the project received a gold medal in the national thematic competition “Golden Key – China Action for SDG” in 2024, highlighting the attractiveness of the “Green Power on the Seas” brand.
State Grid Wuzhong Power Supply Company will continue its efforts to promote insulation pilot line installations while effectively transforming innovative results into practical applications. Building on last year’s activity survey and evaluation report, we aim to deepen our collaboration with avian experts and environmental protection organizations. We will conduct in-depth analysis and research to design artificial nest boxes suitable for various bird populations and habitats, which will be installed in areas with high breeding density.
