Yip made history as Singapore’s first Paralympic gold medalist at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, followed by her gold medal at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, and currently holds two world records for his efforts. The unveiling of this wax figure coincides with the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, which Yip will participate in later this year.
Yip said: “I am absolutely honored to have my wax figure made by Madame Tussauds Singapore and placed alongside other sporting legends. This is a proud moment for me and a testament to the hard work and effort I have put in over the years. I hope this moment will also inspire and empower Singaporeans to achieve their dreams, regardless of their abilities, and foster an inclusive society where all are celebrated. »
Yip’s wax figure captures the triumphant moment on the podium during the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, where she received her gold medal. Dressed in the Singapore national tracksuit she wore during the Tokyo Paralympics, her winning smile and aura are faithfully captured in the image of her wax figure.
Steven Chung, Managing Director of Madame Tussauds Singapore, said: “It is an honor to add Pin Xiu to our star-studded roster. The figurine not only pays tribute to his sporting prowess, it highlights the importance of inclusion – a value we at Madame Tussauds warmly embrace – and breaking barriers in the world of sport. Pin Xiu’s achievements are an inspiration to aspiring athletes and hold a special place in the hearts of Singaporeans.
The wax figure was meticulously crafted by a team of expert Madame Tussauds sculptors and artists, and took over six months to create to ensure the figure captured Yip’s strength and personality. The team took special care to ensure the figure fit the wheelchair it was delivered in, which is the exact model Yip uses.
Yip’s silhouette was unveiled by Yip herself with Mr Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Second Minister for Law at the Singapore Sports Hub. The unveiling ceremony follows the announcement by World Para Swimming (WPS) and the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC) which named Singapore as the host city for the 2025 World Para Swimming Championships.
Madame Tussauds believes in creating a memorable experience with inclusive spaces and programs for all, such as working with SDSC to welcome special needs groups to the attraction as part of their community outreach initiative. Additionally, guests with special needs and their caregivers receive 30% off admission tickets throughout the year.
Yip’s “wax twin” will be on display at Madame Tussauds Singapore from February 6, 2024, where Singaporeans and international guests can take a winning photo with the sports star. Guests can purchase the special package which includes the entry ticket and Yip’s book “The Mermaid Became Champion”, with a portion of the sales proceeds going to SDSC to support the development of future para-athletes.
