VANCOUVER, BC, October 18, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Seaspan is pleased to provide an update on its SAVER (Seaspan Action on Vessel Energy Reduction) launched in 2013, pioneering an early commitment to efficiency and sustainability, long before environmental regulations began to shape the industry’s decarbonization agenda.
Guided by its deeply rooted ESG framework and decarbonization strategy, the company has implemented an ambitious vessel modernization and upgrade program across its entire fleet., work closely with customers to improve vessel performance and reduce environmental impact. Modernization and upgrades are effective ways to extend vessel life while providing customers with reduced emissions and fuel flexibility.
Seaspan has successfully completed 552 individual upgrades, with another 85 projects planned or underway. These initiatives encompass a wide range of improvements, including electrical, thermodynamic and hydrodynamic efficiency improvements, as well as complete renovations. A total of 86 vessels have been upgraded, with an additional 10 currently undergoing modifications or scheduled for upcoming upgrades, including methanol main engine conversion modifications scheduled for delivery in mid-2026.
The total investment in these projects reached $226.5 million, including executed and planned initiatives.
Leveraging its fully integrated vessel lifecycle management platform, from design, supervision, operation, upgrade, modernization and recycling, combined with vertically integrated engineering, procurement and construction, Seaspan’s SAVER upgrade program can be divided into three main categories:

- Renewal of propeller and ailerons
- Modification of the bulbous arch
- Main engine decommissioning
- Energy recovery systems

- Elevation and extension of the lashing bridge
- Increased battery weight
- Improved docking model
- CSA and loading computer upgrades
- Refrigerant expansion

Green fuel and emissions reduction:
- Fuel conversion modernization
- Purifier installation
- Shore Power/AMP System Upgrades
These improvements reduce fuel consumption, increase cargo loading capacity and improve flexibility, allowing Seaspan customers to remain competitive in an evolving market.
