HONG KONG SAR – Media Outreach – July 31, 2023 –
Schneider-Electricleader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, opened a new profiling workshop on July 5 at its factory in Sarel in Alsace, France.
Created in 1956, the Sarel site specializes in the production of
electrical cabinets, boxes and cases. Within the factory, the steel is cut, bent, punched, screwed, welded, fitted with fixtures and painted and the finished products, designed to withstand intensive use in harsh environments, are then shipped fully assembled or in spare parts.
In 2021, Sarel had the third highest energy consumption of all Schneider Electric sites, primarily due to the site’s energy-intensive painting and baking processes. These investments will reduce energy consumption: the new machines consume three to four times less energy than their older counterparts, with a return on investment of around three years. The rest of the investment will be used to replace other old machines, thus increasing the overall productivity of the site.
“Across all of our sites, we are taking decisive action to reduce our energy consumption and decarbonize our operations,” said Laurent Bataille, President of Schneider Electric France. “The Sarel plant is an exemplary example of our Group-wide commitment to achieve net zero emissions for our own operations and to reduce our CO2 emissions by 25% across our entire value chain by 2030.”
Decarbonize the factory with energy efficiency and innovation
To meet its ambitious carbon reduction targets and be more energy efficient, the site switched to LED lighting and optimized its heating and energy-intensive processes, helping to reduce energy consumption by 25% by May 2022 (compared to May 2019). From July, the site’s burners will switch from gas to electricity and an electric heat pump will soon be installed. All processes will be decarbonized between 2025 and 2026. Later this year, the first product made from green steel, made in a fully electrified process, will leave the factory. It will be distributed in packaging without plastic film because decarbonizing all operations also means using decarbonized raw materials.
