SAN FRANCISCO, October 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — At the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics® (TCT) 2025 Conference, Dr. Jarrod Frizzell of Christ Hospital (Cincinnati, OH) presented real-world studies¹,² demonstrating that the Complete EggNest™ radiation protection system Since Egg Medical, Inc.. (Roseville, Minn.) significantly reduces radiation exposure for all response team members, including physicians, nurses and technologists, compared to traditional protection methods. During X-ray-guided cardiovascular procedures, scattered radiation poses a well-documented occupational risk to catheterization laboratory personnel, contributing to increased risks of cancer, cataracts, and cardiovascular disease. Conventional lead aprons, while providing some protection, have resulted in a high prevalence of orthopedic injuries among operators and staff.
In the studies presented, the average operator scattered radiation dose during coronary and PCI procedures using the complete EggNest system was only 0.16 mRem per case. As a reminder, the annual occupational exposure limit in the United States is 5,000 mRem, which means an operator would have to perform more than 31,000 cases before approaching this limit. With a typical interventionalist performing 300 to 500 cases per year, this technology allows for a career’s worth of procedures to be performed with minimal exposure, often without the need for heavy lead aprons.
Protection of the entire team was also demonstrated: nurses and technologists recorded average exposures of just 0.03 mRem per case, confirming the ability of the EggNest system to protect the entire room.
“Having a radiation protection system that consistently protects my entire team as well as or better than the heavy lead we carried in the past means we are taking care of patients. And ourselves,” said Dr. Jarrod Frizzell.
Dr. Robert Riley, chief scientific advisor to Egg Medical and interventional cardiologist at Overlake Medical Center (Seattle, WA), added:
“These real-world results reinforce what previous studies have shown: the complete EggNest system is the only proven solution to significantly reduce radiation exposure for every team member. By allowing staff to perform procedures with ultralight or lead-free aprons, we can also significantly reduce orthopedic injuries associated with traditional protection.
Dr. Frizzell and colleagues continue their evaluation of the EggNest system in structural and electrophysiological cardiac procedures, expanding the evidence base for its use in a wide range of X-ray guided interventions.
