SINGAPORE, January 3, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — PacificLight Power Pte Ltd (PLP) is delighted to announce that it has been awarded the right to construct, own and operate a hydrogen-ready combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant on Jurong Island by the Energy Market Authority. (EMA). Planned start of operations in January 2029it will be the largest and most efficient class H CCGT, at the cutting edge of technology, in Singaporewith a capacity of at least 600 MW. The new factory will play a vital role in strengthening that of Singapore energy security, improving grid stability and advancing the country’s transition to a low-carbon future.
The new plant will complement PLP’s existing 830 MW CCGT facility, in operation since 2014, and 100 MW fast-start capacity, currently under construction and expected to begin operations in the second quarter of 2025. The plant, which will be built on a new site, will include a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS), forming the first BESS-integrated CCGT unit in Singapore. This underlines PLP’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge solutions that improve system stability while reducing operational costs and environmental impact.
The plant will be capable of using at least 30% hydrogen initially and will have the capacity to burn 100% hydrogen in the future. The new Jurong Island site is sufficiently sized to accommodate a second CCGT unit as well as potential for future integration of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technology, strengthening commitment of PLP in favor of long-term decarbonization strategies.
