Professor S. Joe Qin, Wai Kee Kau Chair and Professor of Data Science at Lingnan University, presided over the plaque unveiling ceremony and inauguration of the Lingnan Fellows. He was joined by Professor Xin Yao, Vice President (Research and Innovation), Professor Sam Kwong Tak-wu, Associate Vice President (Strategic Research), and the new fellows, including Professor Tang Tao, member of the Chinese Academy. of Science and President of Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College, Professor Zhang Dongxiao, Member of the United States National Academy of Engineering and Full Professor of the Oriental Institute of Technology of Ningbo (EIT), and Professor Zhou Min, elected member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Asian American Studies, and Walter and Shirley Professor Wang on U.S.-China Relations and Communications at the University of California, Los Angeles. The first of these was Professor Zhou Min’s inaugural lecture on “What Chinatown Reveals: Ethnic Enclaves, Immigrant Selectivity, and Segmented Assimilation,” attended by more than a hundred professors and students.
Professor Zhou highlighted the importance of Chinatown as one of the major ethnic enclaves of immigrant cities in the United States. Recounting her nearly 40 years of life as an immigrant and migration studies scholar, Professor Zhou Min examined key sociological concepts such as ethnic enclaves and segmented assimilation, explaining why patterns of diasporic formation differ over time and why social mobility outcomes are segmented. and vary across ethnoracial groups.
