Cold air will cause temperatures in northern Vietnam to drop to 18-20 degrees Celsius starting Wednesday afternoon, a drop of 10 degrees compared to Tuesday.
Thick layers of fog began to appear over northern Vietnam on Tuesday morning due to sea moisture brought by southeasterly winds. By noon, the temperature in Hanoi rose to 32 degrees.
But a cold air mass is expected to arrive in the northern mountainous regions from Wednesday afternoon, before reaching other areas of northern Vietnam, according to the National Hydrometeorological Forecast Center. The lowlands and Midlands would record the lowest temperatures, between 15 and 18 degrees, while temperatures would be between 10 and 15 degrees for the mountains.

US weather forecast service AccuWeather said temperatures in Hanoi on Wednesday would decrease by 4 degrees compared to Tuesday, from 21-32 degrees to 18-28 degrees. Over the next few days, temperatures in the capital will continue to drop due to cold air, reaching 14-17 degrees by Saturday. High altitude places like Sa Pa in Lao Cai would record temperatures between 11 and 15 degrees.
North-central regions would also feel the brunt of the cold air mass from Wednesday evening, with temperatures plunging to a low of 16-19 degrees.
Nguyen Ngoc Huy, a meteorologist, said weather conditions in the north would alternate between hot and cold this month. Elderly people, children and people with respiratory illnesses should monitor the weather forecast to take preventive measures.
Northern Vietnam experienced a period of intense cold from February 24 to March 3. Experts said the long-lasting cold spell was rare, with the last cold spell of such duration being 20 years ago.
