HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – August 5, 2023 – The 27the July 2023, M+, Asia’s premier global museum of contemporary visual culture in West Kowloon’s cultural district, invited over 600 guests to open the world’s first-ever museum exhibition dedicated to Song Huai-Kuei, widely known from during his lifetime under the name of Madame Chanson. The exhibition was opened to the public on 29e July 2023.

During the opening ceremony, M+ collaborated with fashion brand Shanghai Tang to present a fashion show, inviting guests to reminisce about Madame Song’s lifelong dedication to promoting Chinese culture to the world. Synonymous with the idea of ”East meets West”, Shanghai Tang has associated its collection of imperial couture with the multiple identities of Madame Song: artist, entrepreneur, fashionista and cultural ambassador. Shanghai Tang’s founder, the late Sir David Tang, was a good friend of Madame Song, which made the fashion stunt even more significant.
Shanghai Tang presented tailor-made dresses and jewelry series that represent the opportunity to promote cultural exchanges. Famous models in the fashion show that night included Angie Ng, Zelia Zhong, Moon Lau, Christy Lai, Joyce Ngai and many more. During the show’s finale, Suhanya Raffel, Museum Director, M+, led celebrity models to cheer on and celebrate the perfect opening night. Representatives from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government, West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA), M+, family members of Song Huai-Kuei and sponsors of “Madame Song : Pioneering Art and Fashion in China” attended the exhibition opening ceremony. During the event, Bernard Chan, Chairman of the Board of M+, Betty Fung, Managing Director, West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, Suhanya Raffel, Museum Director, M+, Doryun Chong, Deputy Director, Curator and Chief Curator, M+, and Dr. Pi Li, Curator of “Madame Song: Pioneer of Art and Fashion in China” and former Senior Curator and Head of Curatorial Affairs, M+ also dressed in Shanghai Tang for participate in the ceremony.
Madame Song’s extraordinary story offers a lens through which the public can appreciate the significant transformation of Chinese visual culture after the country’s reform and opening up to the world. Focusing on the life and times of Song Huai-Kuei, the exhibition will feature over 320 artifacts to chronicle Song’s fascinating biography and his underappreciated influence on China’s transformation during the period of reform and opening up. in the 1980s into a cosmopolitan and culturally diverse world. today’s society.
In July 2023, Shanghai Tang launched a pop-up store at M+ Shop. In addition to showcasing the brand’s homewares, apparel, handbags and accessories, Shanghai Tang has also selected a series of artworks and products in collaboration with artists that are exclusively sold in limited quantities at The M+ Shop. The SHANGHAI TANG+ pop-up space is featured in the boutique next to the museum’s Artists’ Square entrance, specially adorned with Shanghai Tang’s signature fluorescent colors. Shanghai Tang believes that the “+” symbol represents the diverse and inclusive nature of the collaboration, pointing not only to the visual cultural forms that M+ has always conveyed, but also to a selection of carefully selected designs for the art pop-up.
