According to Insider, Twitter users in Japan have gone crazy for a range of extremely unique backpacks, which look like real cats.
This delicious product is handmade by the Japanese housewife Miho Katsumi, in the prefecture of Fukui (Japan). The hand-stitched bags feature cats with pink paws, large glittering eyes and furry tails. Katsumi has created lifelike copies of many cat breeds, such as the Persian, Munchkin and British Shorthair. According to her official website, the bags are mostly made of faux fur, hand-dyed by Katsumi.
Making such bags is not easy. Katsumi told Insider it took her a week to design each bag and one to three months to make.
“It may take longer to achieve satisfactory results,” Katsumi added.
The cats are sewn one by one. A small pattern usually requires 22 pieces of hand-stitched fabric, while large patterns like a backpack consist of about 80 different pieces of fabric.
On April 15, Katsumi posted four photos to Twitter of the kitty bag posing outside. One of the photos shows a cat holding a toy fish that looks just like the real thing. “The weather is nice today and I can shoot outside,” she wrote. So far, the post has been retweeted more than 11,000 times.
People said they thought they were real cats. Many people are interested and indicate that they plan to buy such a backpack.
Twitter user @emlynx commented, “First of all, who doesn’t think this is a real cat?”.
However, Katsumi who want to get their hands on Katsumi’s creation will have to wait as she received a lot of orders last year. Katsumi will not accept new orders until further notice.
Miho wrote on Twitter on April 17: “I’m glad so many people are praising my work. We are currently trying to fulfill orders from last year. Thank you for your understanding. †
To date, Katsumi has sold 70 works. Each cat backpack retails for 140,000 Japanese yen ($1,074).
Katsumi claims to be a cat lover on Yahoo! – the site where she sells her products. Backpacks aren’t the only thing Katsumi does. She also makes purses and helmets for cats.
In Japan, cats are considered “the emperor” and are always pampered to the fullest. In Japanese folklore, cats are believed to bring good luck and have the power to protect their owners.
