This international transhipment port project provides a competitive advantage with other countries in the region and a breakthrough in marine economic development for both Ho Chi Minh City and the whole country.
Currently, Singapore’s international transhipment port is the busiest port in the world in terms of cargo handling weight. Each year, this port carries about a fifth of the world’s container freight.
According to global maritime market data provider Baltic Exchange (UK), Singapore has maintained its position as the world’s leading shipping hub for eight consecutive years.
Every year, millions of containers carrying 500 million tons of cargo or more are passed through Singapore’s transhipment port. In 2021, Singapore’s container capacity has increased to a record nearly 37.5 million TEU (1 TEU is equivalent to 1 container with a length of 20 feet). About 80% of the containers arriving in Singapore are transhipped to other ports via ships.
In 2018, the Port of Singapore handled cargo volume of up to 630 million tons, the highest in the past 8 years. In addition, although the world witnessed a global supply disruption in 2021, Singapore still handled nearly 600 million tons of goods in total. These figures put the Port of Singapore in second place, just behind Shanghai in terms of cargo handling.
Given the number of containers passing through and the amount of cargo handled at the transhipment port, the maritime industry accounts for approximately 7% of Singapore’s GDP per year, equivalent to approximately USD 20 billion per year.

According to the master plan for the development of Vietnam’s seaport system in the 2021-2030 period, it is necessary to build container ports of the seaports of Ho Chi Minh City soon in the 2021-2030 period to meet the needs of import and export of goods. present and future from now to 2030 of Ho Chi Minh City in particular and the provinces of the Southern Key Economic Area in general.
The Can Gio wharf area has favorable natural conditions in terms of channel depth and geographic location on international maritime routes, which can accommodate container ships with a tonnage of 250,000 DWT (24,000 TEUs) operating on European routes, Africa and America. In addition, the Can Gio area is at the beginning of the Cai Mep – Thi Vai navigation route, has a great depth, is less affected by conditions, waves and wind, so it will create good conditions for ships to access. Yard.
In a favorable estuary position, the port will have a good front in connecting with major ports around the world. But also the infrastructure, transport system and logistics center directly on the port and surrounding areas must be invested in order to compete and attract large ships passing through the port.
