MUNICH, GERMANY – Media OutReach Newswire – March 28, 2024 – Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co. Ltd. (HD KSOE) have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as a first step towards the joint development of emerging applications for the electrification of marine engines and machinery using energy-efficient power semiconductor technology.
Infineon and HD KSOE are jointly working on power solutions creating eco-friendly propulsion systems for ships using electricity and hydrogen, as shown in this LH2 carrier design by HD KSOE.

HD KSOE, a pioneer in the maritime sector and a global leader in shipbuilding, is already focused on creating decarbonized and environmentally friendly ship technology that uses electricity and hydrogen. The company will now cooperate with Infineon to create innovative power solutions for propulsion technology, a critical part of ship electrification. Infineon’s power semiconductors are driving the transformation towards clean, safe and intelligent mobility services for all means of transportation. For modern maritime applications, they are a key factor in ensuring precise control of multiple power modules, such as large capacity propulsion drives.
Infineon will provide HD KSOE with technical support and guidance on power modules and semiconductor system solutions, and share information on new trends in semiconductors for marine applications. With this partnership, HD KSOE aims to improve the reliability and performance of ship propulsion technology, thereby contributing to environmental sustainability through ship electrification.
Worldwide, shipping is responsible for nearly 2.5 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions, according to the International Maritime Organization. It produces a billion tonnes of CO2 every year. The transition to electric vessels is imperative to mitigate the environmental impact of shipping.
“We are pleased to sign a memorandum of understanding with Infineon, which supports our innovation efforts to become a leader in ship electrification technology,” said Chang Kwang-pil, chief technology officer of HD KSOE. “Together we will combine forces to create energy-saving energy solutions for CO2-friendly propulsion drives.”
“At Infineon, we provide the technologies needed in today’s transportation world to enable the electrification that will shape the future of mobility,” said Dr. Peter Wawer, President of Green Industrial Power at Infineon. Technology. “We are excited to work closely with HD KSOE to develop clean, safe and smart mobility solutions. In this way, we contribute to a more sustainable marine engine ecosystem and promote the decarbonization of maritime transport.
