MUNICH, GERMANY & ZURICH, SWITZERLAND – Media OutReach – October 4, 2023 – Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) today announced that Infineon has acquired pioneering Zurich-based startup 3db Access AG (3db). in the field of secure solutions with low power Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology and is already today a preferred IP supplier for major automotive brands. This acquisition further strengthens Infineon’s portfolio of secure intelligent access, precise location and enhanced sensing. Infineon now adds UWB to its connectivity range including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth®/Bluetooth® Low Energy and NFC solutions. The first set of IoT use cases include secure access and authentication, precise location tracking and indoor navigation, and presence detection using UWB radar implementations. Infineon acquires 100 percent of the company’s shares. The parties have agreed not to disclose the amount of the transaction. ABI Research expects the UWB chipset market to grow 13% annually, reaching approximately $3.1 billion by 2028.[1].
The demand for UWB-enabled devices is expected to grow significantly with smartphone manufacturers adding UWB functionality in the latest and future generations of their products. As part of Infineon, 3db is evolving from an IP provider to a team of experts selling solutions unlocking the best of this technology for smartphones as well as cars and enabling autonomous integration into low-power IoT devices.
In the dynamic UWB market and facing rapidly growing demand from many manufacturers, suppliers are also differentiating themselves through their research activities. With their combined expertise, Infineon and 3db will now offer additional benefits to their customers: Originally a spin-off from ETH Zurich, 3db maintains a strategic partnership with ETH. Infineon is set to further develop this relationship, in addition to intensified collaboration within relevant standards bodies for secure localization and sensing. Additionally, Infineon’s broad market access is supported by extensive R&D activities. With 59 R&D sites worldwide, Infineon currently holds more than 31,000 patents and invests 13% of its revenue in R&D each year.
