The central province of Quang Nam has experienced heavy rains over the past two days due to the impact of cold air and high-altitude winds, with rain levels reaching up to 470 mm in some areas. Upstream hydropower plants opened their floodgates and, combined with the rising tide, streets near the Hoai River in Hoi An (pictured) were plunged between 0.2 and 1m underwater.
Nguyen The Hung, vice-president of Hoi An town, said flooding peaked around 1 a.m. on Wednesday on the Thu Bon River, 1.7m deep. Around 7 a.m., the flood level fell to 1.5 m and gradually receded. Hoi An city has allowed students in some primary schools not to attend school.
The rains stopped in Hoi An at noon and the sky became clear.
Upstream hydroelectric plants also began to release less water, so flood levels were reduced by about 0.4 m from their peaks.
However, Bach Dang Street next to the Hoai River is still severely flooded, with water reaching 0.5m deep. Shops were closed and people were traveling by boat.
