Smart Chips Function
Embedding other apps in your documents is now possible as Google Docs introduces smart chips, based on a report from The Verge. Several third-party applications can now be used simultaneously with Docs.
The “@” symbol is now more powerful as Google extends this feature with third-party smart chips. Users now have the ability to tag and view information from various applications that partner with the company by tagging and mentioning them using the @ mentions.
Developers of the third-party apps will begin work on integrating with Google’s new feature this week as the company plans to roll it out in January 2023.
Third Party Apps
Google has listed on their Google Cloud the third-party applications that will be compatible once the feature is released. These are AODocs, Asana, Atlassian, Figma, Tableau, Miro and Zendesk.
“We are extending smart chips into our ecosystem of partners so that our users can add even more rich data, more context and critical information to the flow of their work,” Google said.
The “@” symbol was also used to assign a meeting, link another document, tag another person or add emojis as part of the Smart Canvas launched last May 2021. Clicking on just one symbol opens up various possibilities for users, such as interactive building blocks, templates and checklists.
Google Meet updates
In addition to Docs, Workspace will also include Google Meet in the update next year by giving developers access to this application, as basic meeting controls are integrated into their apps, according to Android Central.
An example is the use of Figma. Co-editing a Figma document within the Meet call is possible without two windows on your laptop or computer. Chat and Spaces will also be added to the application, similar features to its competitors such as Microsoft Teams and Slack.

Other Google Docs updates
In addition to the interactive work-related capabilities that users can use in Google Docs, the “@” function also introduced a new way to embed an emoji in user documents. A drop-down menu of emojis will appear with different options regarding what the user typed after the symbol.
This feature was introduced in August of this year, but only became fully accessible last month.
