The Pixel smartphone represents Google’s ideal vision of Android, but there has always been Something off on Google’s Pixel phone which made it difficult to recommend blindly. With the success of the Pixels 3a and 4a, Google learned that a phone doesn’t need the top-performing chipset or top-notch functionality to be successful. Everything had to be done right, without compromising the basics of what people need from a phone: stability, great battery life, and a top-notch camera. The Pixel 5 delivered on these without defaulting to the high-end (and more expensive) chipset of the year.
While we were pretty critical of the Pixel 5 when we first reviewed it (mostly for its outdated camera hardware and lack of a high-end variant), it started to grow on us. Now four months later and we just couldn’t put it down.
As we used it, we started to realize that a good phone doesn’t have to be huge, it doesn’t need to break benchmark records, and it doesn’t have to be huge. doesn’t need to cost more than a big one. It must be reliable, have reliable software, and be able to cope with heavy daily use without resorting to a power bank.
In this long-term review, we used the Pixel 5 as our primary device for over three and a half months. It was enough time to get through the honeymoon phase to really understand the Pixel 5’s quirks, shenanigans, and press all of its buttons.
The Snapdragon 765G’s energy efficiency with its future-proof support for 5G networks made it a solid choice for this year’s cheaper Pixel 5 (the Pixel 4 and 4XL started at $ 799 and $ 899 $, respectively). The lower price still includes features normally found in more expensive phones like two-way wireless charging, a 90Hz display, and IP68 water resistance.
