If you have no idea what is O-RAN or OpenRAN Alliance, it is a vendor-neutral approach to Radio Access Network (RAN) technologies such as masts, antennas, and small cells.
As of the moment, the RAN market is dominated by Huawei, Nokia, and Ericsson. This industry is also characterized by highly integrated hardware and software that make it impossible to mix and match innovations.
On the other hand, OpenRAN is quite different from this market. The reason behind this O-RAN offers standardized designs that allow a variety of firms to supply hardware and software. This means that different operators benefit from its reduced costs, greater flexibility, and increased innovation from a wider range of suppliers.
Why Google Cloud Joins O-RAN Alliance
According to Tech Radar’s latest report, Google Cloud service joined the OpenRAN Alliance since the search engine giant believes that it is an opportunity to lessen complexity, scale, and costs.

Aside from this, Google Cloud also wants to bring its track record of software innovation to the O-RAN Alliance’s commercialization efforts. On the other hand, the giant tech firm added that it intends to build its own scalable network to support its machine learning capabilities and other services to help create zero-touch automated 5G networks.
“We believe that industry-wide open reference architectures and interfaces for RAN are key to driving innovation across communication service provider (CSP) mobile networks-with the O-RAN ALLIANCE driving significant advances in the RAN layer and already gaining traction with a number of large CSPs who have become early adopters of the standard,” explained Managing Director, Telecom Industry Solutions Amol Phadke.
Google Cloud x Ericsson
IT Web reported that Google Cloud and Ericsson came together to help various communications service providers. The two companies are currently planning to do this by bringing Ericsson 5G portfolio and Google Cloud Compute Platform in one place.
On the other hand, they also confirmed that they are now working to develop new solutions at Ericsson’s Silicon Valley D-15 Lands. Right now, Google Cloud and its new partner already finished the Ericsson functional onboarding on Google’s Anthos. This innovation is expected to allow communications service providers and enterprises to have telco edge technologies.
