HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – November 22, 2023 – Orion Astropreneur Space Academy (Hong Kong) (OASA) successfully hosted the groundbreaking “Tomorrow’s Technologies Today” event, the city’s first NewSpace conference. Co-organized by Cyberport Hong Kong and funded by the Innovation and Technology Commission, this conference brought together an impressive group of over 40 distinguished speakers from around the world, creating an electrifying atmosphere of innovation and collaboration. Notable luminaries such as Mr. Zhao Chuangdong, member of China’s first group of taikonauts, Professor Po Chi Wu, Berkeley SKYDECK advisor, Professor CK Shum, visionary Ohio State University Professor Emeritus, and Professor Jin-Guang. TENG, President of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), graced the stage with his expertise and insights.
Expanding horizons: beyond astronauts in the new space economy
“Why not Astropreneur as the future? And throughout the day, Gregg encouraged everyone to network, to share, to connect. They are payload specialists, spacecraft engineers, scientists, etc. “Now you are working hard on your scientific theory, which you will be as a payload specialist, you will be in space doing your research.” Professor Kam-Fai Wong, MH, LegCo member, HKSAR; Associate Dean (External Affairs) of the Faculty of Engineering; Professor at the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management at the Chinese University of Hong Kong encouraged us during his speech at the conference.
Witness the birth of space pioneers
The conference received considerable support from leading educational organizations including PolyU, the HKU Space Research Laboratory (HKU LSR) and the Hong Kong Institute of Technology and Higher Education (THEi). Mr. Brian W Tang, Founding Executive Director of HKU’s Law, Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship (LITE) Program, expressed his excitement, saying, “Some people may know that my children and I have already participated in educational activities related to space. projects, and it’s great that organizations like OASA, Gregg Li and IEEE are looking to encourage and inspire the next generation.” This collective commitment highlights the critical importance of nurturing future talent in the NewSpace industries rapidly evolving.
SpaceTech: strengthening our smart city and fueling a sustainable future
Industry collaborations have become the cornerstone of NewSpace technology advancement. Dr. Toa CHARM, Founding Chairman of OpenCertHub, asked a thought-provoking question during his speech: “How can we effectively connect the wealth of information captured by satellites with data collected on the ground? The possibilities are immense, with significant implications for social progress and business growth across diverse sectors such as smart cities, financial services, retail and supply chain management.
Leveraging Hong Kong’s Resources for the NewSpace Economy
