HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – November 24, 2023 – Climate change is having adverse effects around the world, including extreme weather events that are becoming increasingly evident and worrying. In response, various regions are actively undertaking green transformation and making every effort to reduce carbon emissions. The Hong Kong SAR government has set ambitious targets to combat climate change through the “Climate Targets of Hong Kong” initiative to reduce carbon emissions by 50% before 2035 in Hong Kong and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. To achieve these goals without eroding our quality of life, it is essential that all citizens and all industries are made aware of the carbon emissions associated with our daily lives: clothing, food , life and travel. By exploring ways to reduce our carbon footprint, working together to change our habits and adopting a sustainable lifestyle, we can make a significant contribution to mitigating the effects of climate change.
Funded by the Environment and Conservation Fund (ECF), the Hong Kong Women Professionals and Entrepreneurs Association (HKWPEA) launched the
“Environment and Conservation Fund Carbon Neutrality Campaign” at the Zero Carbon Building today. The Hong Kong Productivity Council is the implementing agent for the campaign. The campaign promotes the reduction of carbon emissions by adopting sustainable and low-carbon practices in personal and institutional contexts. It encourages individuals and organizations to adopt sustainable, low-carbon and green lifestyles and operating models, and to work together to build a low-carbon future. The campaign is organized in response to the global call for action on climate change and reduction of carbon emissions, and to help realize the HKSAR Government’s vision of achieving carbon neutrality. ‘by 2050. Through this initiative, the HKWPEA seeks to create significant impact by mobilizing for behavior change. Mr. Fong Kin-wa, Deputy Director of Environmental Protection (1) and Dr. Eric Cheng, President of ECF, are the guests of honor at the campaign launch ceremony.
Mr. Fa long time Kin-wa, deputy director of environmental protection (1), said: “In line with our national ‘double carbon’ targets, Hong Kong strives to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and halve the total level of carbon emissions compared to the baseline level of 2005 before 2035. Through carbon neutrality advertising campaigns, the government encourages the community to change habits and reduce carbon emissions together to adopt a low-carbon lifestyle.
Ms Grace Tse, Vice President of HKWPEA, said: “As an active member of society and business, HKWPEA has always been committed to sustainable development, which is the “golden key” to solving any problem. Following the success of the city-wide “FoodEver WasteNever” campaign in 2017, which managed to reduce food waste by up to 12%, the HKWPEA is pleased to once again receive funding from ECF to launch this year the carbon neutrality campaign across the country. The impact of climate change is far-reaching, calling for immediate and urgent action, otherwise we could face catastrophic consequences. Our campaign is designed to be very practical, with a competition focused on reducing carbon emissions linked to our daily lives: clothing, food, living and travel. , we will organize more than ten activities, including tours, workshops and seminars covering different topics to promote participants’ in-depth understanding of sustainable development and carbon reduction. The aim is to help participants improve their knowledge and explore practical and sustainable aspects. Green Living actions, to gradually adopt a green and low-carbon lifestyle.”
The Carbon Neutrality Campaign competition runs for approximately one year and aims to encourage participants to adopt sustainable, low-carbon lifestyles in all aspects of clothing, eating, life and travel. Participants who demonstrate an exceptional discount will have the opportunity to win incredible prizes. To facilitate participation and record keeping, an online platform dedicated to the competition has been created (https://CarbonNeutralityhk.com) for individuals/institutions/teams of up to 4 members to register for the competition, record their carbon emissions at designated points and track how their carbon footprint changes over time. The platform also provides carbon reduction tips and related information, hoping to inspire participants to innovate more practical and effective green living actions. By providing a user-friendly and informative platform, the HKWPEA hopes to mobilize broad participation and help individuals and organizations make lasting changes in their daily lives.
The campaign for carbon neutrality has so far received support from 14 professional and trade organizations, including (in no particular order) the Association of Women Accountants (Hong Kong) Limited, the China Manufacturers Association, the Association of Chinese Women Entrepreneurs, HKUST Environment and Sustainability Division, Energy Institute (Hong Kong Branch), GBA Carbon Neutrality Association, Hong Kong Federation of Women Lawyers Limited, Hong Kong Green Strategy Alliance, Hong Kong Retail Management Association , Hong Kong Small and Medium Enterprises Association, Hong Kong Women Doctors Association, Hong Kong Institute of Qualified Environmental Professionals, Environmental Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and the Hong Kong Association of Property Management Companies . We urge all Hong Kongers to take action to reduce carbon emissions and live a sustainable lifestyle. Together, we can work to achieve our common goal: saving the earth and protecting future generations.
