ZTE grabbed the headlines last year announcing its Axon 20 5G – the first commercially available phone with an underscreen selfie camera. Being a first generation product, one would imagine that the implementation is far from perfect when it comes to image quality and the latest DxOMark review certainly confirms this. The Axon 20 5G scored a paltry 26 points, the second lowest score seen in DxO’s database.

ZTE Axon 20 5G Scorecard
The only good things about the Axons 20’s 32MP f / 2.0 selfie snapper are that it offers stable exposure and focus. Everything else was at different levels of disappointment. DxOMark marks horrible color reproduction, lack of detail and extremely high noise levels. Artifact scores were the lowest seen in the examiner’s database with significant shade changes for subjects and background.
The under-screen flash module is also rated quite low, and the video performance is clearly poor as well. Video stabilization was another weak spot, as were ghosting and poor color reproduction.

Our own review of the Axon 20 5G confirmed that the UD selfie camera is not quite ready for the mass market and we are eagerly awaiting the second generation version.
