I heard that avocados are high in fat, so eating them can lead to weight gain. Is it true? (Phuong Vy, HCMC)
The avocado is a subtropical fruit, native to Mexico and Central America. They are often used as an ingredient for various dishes and drinks.
According to the Vietnamese food composition table, 100 grams of avocados contain 101 kcal, 1.9 grams of protein, 9.4 grams of fat and 2.3 grams of carbohydrates.
This fruit also contains several vitamins and minerals, including calcium, iron, vitamin C, and B vitamins. Therefore, avocados are mostly made up of fat, with 1.9 grams of saturated fatty acids, 5.5 grams of monounsaturated fatty acids and 1.68 grams of polyunsaturated fatty acids per 100 grams of fruit. Avocados do not contain cholesterol.
The fats in avocados are good fats which are useful in fat transformation. For this reason, the fruit is often included in diets.

However, it should be noted that diets are not just about providing good fats. The basic principle of diets is to consume fewer calories than you consume. Thus, those aiming to lose weight should avoid consuming saturated fats in animal fats, animal visceral organs, fried and stir-fried dishes. It is recommended that they turn to sources of protein such as lean meats, fish, skimmed milk and cheese.
Avocados can be used in salads and sushi, or mixed into cereal. When eaten with sugar or condensed milk, the dish can provide too much energy and lead to weight gain.
A healthy and adapted diet is essential for effective weight loss. You are recommended to undergo a nutritional check-up and a micronutrient test, so that the doctors can give you a suitable diet.
