DHL Express, the world’s leading provider of international express services, has started full-fledged operation of Incheon Gateway after investing 131 million euros (175 billion KRW) to expand the gateway in 2019. The expansion aims to meet the growing demand for air cargo at the gateway, due to growing foreign trade in South Korea and increasing international express imports and exports with countries in the Asia-Pacific, including Singapore, Japan, China, Australia and Taiwan.
Sean Wall, Executive Vice President of Network Operations and Aviation for Asia Pacific at DHL Express, was on hand to commemorate the opening of the new Incheon Gateway. He said: “We have been processing more goods in South Korea in recent years and we expect demand to continue on its upward trajectory. Between 2011 and today, the volume of transit cargo handling we have handled in the country has more than tripled. “The expanded Incheon gateway comes at the right time as it plays an important role in facilitating regional and intra-Asian trade, especially for the Northeast Asian region, including Dalian, Qingdao, Wuxi , Ulaanbaatar and Guam.”
The upgraded Incheon Gateway now has a gross area of 59,248 square meters, three times the size of the previous gateway at 19,946 square meters. Handling capacity is also increased by more than 3.5 times to reach 28,400 parts per hour. The gateway houses a 5.5 kilometer-long conveyor belt and 19 automated x-ray inspection machines to ensure shipment contents are safe and compliant. Additionally, Incheon Gateway is a critical logistics facility, connecting DHL’s global hubs and gateways via seven dedicated DHL aircraft and 40 partner airline aircraft. This can meet the ever-increasing demand for transit shipments in the Northeast Asia region.
To process import and export shipments faster and more efficiently, Incheon Gateway has a fully automated sorting and handling system. In particular, an automated document and small package sorter can efficiently process more than 10,000 packages per hour, significantly improving processing speed and operation proficiency. Thus, more than 30 minutes of delivery time for imported goods is saved.
To minimize greenhouse gas emissions, the installation is partly powered by solar energy. A 1 megawatt solar power generator is installed across the entire roof area (5,700 square meters) of the Gateway. The solar array can produce energy that covers around 30% of the energy consumed by the facility, reducing around 650 tonnes of carbon emissions per year. This is the first case among Incheon International Airport’s cargo terminals to use solar energy.
ByungKoo Han, Country Manager of DHL Express Korea, said: “The Incheon Gateway serves as a strategic facility that connects South Korea and the Asia-Pacific region to the world. Since its initial opening in 2009, the processed volume of imports and exports at Incheon Gateway has increased by more than 90% in 2022. With this expansion, we are confident that we can effectively manage the increased volume of shipments and meet the growing demand for international express delivery over the coming decade.
South Korea is the world’s sixth-largest e-commerce market. Incheon’s largest gateway will also now better help Korean cross-border e-commerce companies expand into overseas markets.
