A modular solution for maritime decarbonization
Most carbon capture systems require costly and high energy intensity systems to compress and store CO₂ on board, but the compact system and based on Seabound containers Capture the CO₂ directly from the exhaust of a ship and binds it with a lime sorbant to form solid limestone dumplings. This removes the need for co₂ under pressure reservoirs and also rationalizes logistics on the edge because limestone can be discharged in shipping containers in the form of ordinary cargo.
The sea system is designed to provide flexibility to shipowners – modular units can be extended to match a ship’s emissions. The system works effectively, using exhaust heat to maintain the process while requiring only minimal energy for sensors and valves. Limestone can then be sold to be used as a building materials or the nearby post-proxy port to release CO₂, which can be used in other products (for example, the production of electronic fuels) or for sequestration, with recycled lime for future capture. Technology also removes sulfur emissions, making it a dual -use purifier that helps ships reduce pollution without costly replacement of the fleet.
Concepts with sea tests
Fredriksson and Wen met at the University and co-founded Seabound in 2021, motivated by the need for a practical solution to sea programs. Fredriksson had worked with maritime e-fuel, where the captured co₂ was necessary as raw material but was lacking in supplies.
