BEIJING, December 22, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — The Temple of Agriculture In Beijing played an important role in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. For nearly 600 years, 25 emperors personally visited or sent ministers to perform spring agricultural ceremonies and offer sacrifices to Shennong, the god of agriculture.
Built in 1420 during the reign of Yongle, the temple’s predecessor was the Mountains and Rivers Temple of Nankeen. When Emperor Zhu Di moved the Ming capital to Beijinghe built a larger temple inspired by Nankeen temple, which gradually evolved into the Temple of Agriculture.
The Taisui Hall, the largest complex of temple buildings, now serves as a major exhibition hall of the Beijing Museum of Ancient Architecture, displaying models of classical Chinese buildings and demonstrating the solemnity of royal architecture.
Ancient Chinese architecture is primarily structured in wood, chosen for its availability, versatility, and resistance to earthquakes. Craftsmen developed sophisticated techniques for selecting and constructing materials. Timber framing consists of columns, beams, girders and purlins, with innovative structural forms such as lifting beam and drill-support structures.
A unique architectural element is the Dougong (support sets), which support the weight and connect the beam frames to the column walls. Mortise and tenon joints were invented to create resilient frames by connecting different components.
Speaking of the Temple of Agriculture, it is worth noting another remarkable example of architectural hierarchy that could be found in the Temple of Heaven. The hierarchy of architectural designs reflected social stratification, with eave structures like the three-layered eaves of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest representing architectural design of the highest order.
Over the centuries, the Temple of Agriculture has evolved from an imperial garden to a public park and a museum of historical architecture, now constituting an important cultural monument that symbolizes China agricultural civilization and architectural heritage along that of Beijing Central axis.
