Sydney, October 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Around 1 million Australian adults have type 2 diabetes and more than 2 million people are estimated to be pre-diabetic or at high risk of developing the disease.* Miroma Project Factory (MPF) collaborated with leading government scientists and researchers to develop a 12-week health program for Australians at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
The Compass app was created through an extensive co-design process with a group of target users. They wanted it to be a game, but not a game; be heavily based on Australian iconography; integrate information and learning as a key deliverable and be engaging, accessible and trustworthy. They wanted to see their progress as a “journey” and be offered challenges to show their resilience – all with the aim of increasing their knowledge as a basis for changing their behavior.
As a leader in behavior change, MPF has ensured that Compass uses proven techniques and scientifically validated data to help users increase their “health literacy” and adopt healthier habits around physical activity and nutrition. Every day of every week, there were missions, represented as stepping stones on the journey, to complete.
Glenn Wong
MPF Production Manager commented
“From the start, this was a true partnership to achieve a common goal. They were very receptive to our ideas, actively participated in the development of the app and gave us great feedback. We are delighted with the results and can see how this can be reused in different ways for different types of good.”
The app uses the health tracker built into devices, including wearables, to record a user’s step count to track their activity and display their progress throughout the program.
Compass users were encouraged to record their mood each day and make targeted improvements related to their levels of physical activity, nutrition and diet, as well as increase their health knowledge and general health awareness. These were depicted in playful graphics and they could see how they were progressing from a human perspective – for example, their steps were depicted as a journey across Australia.
Based on the identified activities, Compass provided them with options to adjust their actions using cognitive and behavioral change techniques. This allowed the app to have a stronger effect on people and develop more lasting changes.
The app was part of a closed trial and included over 300 users. Post-trial feedback was overwhelmingly positive about the app and all users felt that the encouragement and playful nature increased their compliance, enjoyment and participation.
