SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – September 4, 2023 –
Port terminal operator Rhenus Cuxport is further positioning itself to increase automobile traffic with the expansion over an eleven hectare area in the hinterland of the deep water port of Cuxhaven. While the manufacturing market is particularly booming in Asia, Germany is increasingly transforming into an import market for finished vehicles. The Cuxhaven multipurpose terminal is well prepared for these changes and new demand, not least thanks to its location on the North Sea coast and its multimodal transport connections.
Rhenus Cuxport is expanding its existing premises by a third by developing another terminal in the immediate port hinterland. On eleven hectares, the infrastructure is being built to provide storage space for an additional 4,500 vehicles in automotive handling. Additionally, the area is suitable for sectors such as onshore and offshore wind industry due to its ability to support heavy loads. A short drive connects the area to the established Cuxport terminal.
Rhenus Cuxport acquired the space in a far-sighted manner and is thus preparing for a demand that is increasingly felt today: automobile manufacturers and suppliers in Asia are experiencing continued growth. China alone exported nearly two million finished vehicles globally in the first half of 2023. With one of its destinations being Europe, Germany is also moving from an export market to a market of import. This has led to an increased demand for car handling in German and European seaports. “Because Rhenus strategically adapts to this market development, the Cuxhaven trading location will play an increasingly important hub function within the European Rhenus port network, as it offers ideal conditions, especially for the automotive market “, says Michael de Reese, Managing Director of Rhenus Port Logistics. He adds: “Thanks to our favorable location between Central and Northern Europe, we can ideally cope with this growing need and the increasing volumes from Asia and other markets around the world. We are thinking strategically about the future by expanding our operations further inland. at the port.”
Vehicles arrive and leave Cuxhaven on board RoRo vessels, in dry containers or flat-rack. As a multi-purpose terminal, Rhenus Cuxport carries out all intermediate stages, from unloading and loading ships to container unloading and even intermediate storage before further distribution. The new complex will constitute an additional area and is very attractive due to its location in the port hinterland, as it offers direct connections to the A 27 motorway to Bremen and the B 73 main road to Hamburg.
After construction begins in April, the next phases are the finalization of the asphalt application and the installation of the superstructure. Rhenus Cuxport expects construction work to be completed by the end of September. “The opening of the zone is part of the growing demand in the automotive logistics market. With the expansion of capacity, we will be able to offer OEMs reliability and predictability for the processing imports of finished vehicles,” says Claudius Schumacher, Managing Director. by Rhenus Cuxport. In the long term, Rhenus Cuxport also plans to expand its operations from the current six to nine berths, strengthening its position as a central hub in Europe. The multipurpose terminal, in which the Rhenus Group holds a majority stake, has been handling automobiles, general cargo and heavy goods vehicles as well as containers for more than 25 years.
