The bitter U.S.-China relationship of the past two years and the resulting Huawei ban saga under the Trump administration has left a significant dent in the smartphone world. More recently, Xiaomi has been accused of being a “Chinese Communist Military Company”, which prevents US companies from investing in it and could cause more problems for the Chinese smartphone maker in the future.
With the new US administration presented by President Joe Biden, there was great hope that we could see a change in tone on the US side. however, Reuters reports that the US government “Consider adding new restrictions targeted on certain exports of sensitive technologies to China in cooperation with allies.”. The information was leaked by an anonymous senior US official ahead of President Biden’s first official call with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

According to the same report, the new US administration will not waive its current trade tariffs on China imposed by the Trump administration and plans to “conduct extensive consultations and reviews with US allies.” In addition, the Biden administration “Be careful not to provide highly sensitive technology that can advance China’s military capabilities”.
While it is too early to speculate on the possible actions of the new US administration, it certainly looks like we are still a long way from a possible interim deal for both sides in the US and Chinese technology conflict.
