Local travel has risen to the forefront as it remains an easier, safer and often more sustainable travel option as a result of the pandemic.

Staying closer to home retains its importance on the travel agenda, as research by Booking.com reveals that 74% of Vietnamese travelers* are planning to travel within their home country, with 42%* wanting to visit places of interest they normally overlook, when it is safe to do so again.

As Vietnam gradually restarts domestic travel after months of lockdown, Vietnamese travelers have also started researching and planning the local destinations they want to travel to in the near future. According to data from Booking.com, the top 5 most searched destinations in the month of November for post-lockdown travel by Vietnamese travelers are Ho Chi Minh, Danang, Hanoi, Da Lat and Nha Trang. These destinations have also been gearing up for tourism and have released plans for inter-provincial travel with strict safety measures in place.

So prepare to explore and experience Vietnam with a fresh perspective as Booking.com shares tips on how to be a tourist here in the top 5 domestic destinations popular among Vietnamese.

Visit Lesser-Known Markets in Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City is full of quirky and charming markets that are the best examples of the city’s energetic atmosphere. Whether you are looking for common or niche items such as antiques, authentic woodwork, local souvenirs or even insects as pet feeds, there is certainly a  market for you. Skip the beaten track and experience the hidden gems and authenticity of Ho Chi Minh by traveling to lesser-known markets often overlooked by tourists but coveted by locals.

opportunities in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam

Located in Binh Thanh District, Ba Chieu market is a flea market and second-hand paradise for anyone who wants to buy incredible pre-loved goods. It offers a wide variety of product options including clothes, bags, accessories and shoes that are diverse in design, style and quality. It is such a thrilling experience to dig into thrift stores here and unearth one-of-a-kind gems at extremely affordable prices. Ba Chieu market also welcomes visitors with delicious street food to satisfy their hunger after hunting for goods and bargaining for the best deals.

Discover secret gardens at Da Nang

Immerse yourself in the tranquility of hidden gardens and green spaces in Da Nang – Vietnam’s famed central city that has been crowned by the World Wide Fund as the country’s “National Green City.” While in Da Nang, have a picnic or take a leisurely stroll in its many beautiful city parks to experience the most enchanting pathways in this green and sustainable city.

Apart from iconic destinations in Da Nang such as the My Khe beach, Ba Na Hills or Marble Mountain, 29 March Park is a spot that you should not miss. Located at Dien Bien Phu Street, Thanh Khe District, the “green lung” of the city is loved by locals for its fresh air and poetic scenery. It also offers visitors unexpected experiences with a variety of entertainment and amusement activities, such as dancing, fishing, visiting the zoo inside the park, fit for all ages.

Book a Unique Place to Stay at Hanoi

Unconventional stays continue to trend with travelers as 55% of Vietnamese travelers plan to stay in a unique accommodation for their next trip**. Booking.com offers a variety of unique places to stay that give travelers the opportunity to experience a little adventure, coupled with a quirky experience right in our beloved capital of Hanoi. This remarkable and iconic city is known for both the peaceful beauty and organized chaos that it offers. You can spend the day sightseeing, checking out buildings with charming colonial architecture, historical landmarks, hipster restaurants and cafes, art galleries and fashion boutiques with a fun and quirky stay in one of Hanoi’s many unique accommodations.

InterContinental Hanoi Westlake will give you an extraordinary stay with its rooms afloat the famed “Tay Ho” or West Lake – Hanoi’s largest freshwater lake. From the hotel, you are literally a few steps away from West Lake’s 17-kilometer circuit walking trail that encircles the entire lake and is lined with some of the best restaurants and cafes in the capital city. Enjoy a hearty breakfast or a leisurely afternoon coffee in one of the many establishments overlooking the serene lake. You can also rent or ride a motorbike and visit the capital’s iconic spots like the Old Quarter, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Hoan Kiem Lake that’s only 10 to 15 minutes away from the property.

Travel Through Time and Shop Vintage at Da Lat

Step back in time with a visit to the vintage shopping area of Da Lat and get a glimpse of the town’s fashion and style evolution through the decades. You won’t find immense shopping malls selling the latest international fashion here, but will definitely discover brocade products reflecting the soul of this cultural region. With great value and the countless possibilities of uncovering hidden tales from the past, you can get the chance to wear unique and inspiring items and bring home some handicrafts as gifts for your family and friends.

You can find brocade products at tourist areas such as Prenn Pass, Love Valley, Liang Biang Mountain or Da Lat market. But if you have a knack for items that embody the unique culture of different ethnic groups, you can visit B’nerC Brocade Weaving Village in Lac Duong district. This visit will give you an extraordinary opportunity to witness how talented local and ethnic artisans create meticulous products with diverse patterns and textures which bear the imprint of the Central Highlands culture.

Indulge in a Spa Hotel at Nha Trang

Escapism has always been crucial for travelers, Booking.com revealed that almost half (43%) of Vietnamese travelers* are seeking relaxing trips to get away from it all. Why not get pampered for the day or stay for a wellness weekend and experience pure bliss right within your home country? One thing is for sure – Vietnam is rich with stays that are designed for rest, relaxation and pampering. Select a place to stay that offers extensive spa facilities and enjoy a range of holistic treatments and come out with glowing skin and spirits while still having a wonderful time with your loved ones.

Its spa and mud bath offerings, together with a wide range of rejuvenating treatments drawn from old Asian traditions, are guaranteed to give you the most pleasurable and relaxing stay.

…and finally, act like a tourist

Visit the local Welcome or Information Center, take a city pamphlet from the hotel lobby, immerse yourself in a bit of history and culture by joining a museum tour, take silly photos in front of tourist spots, eat at popular restaurants and visit the well-known attractions of our amazing country before Vietnam opens its doors to the world again!
