Speaking to PV, the pastor of Hanoi Cathedral – Anton Nguyen Van Thang, said that after nearly 2 years of renovation, Hanoi Cathedral has completed the exterior painting. Pastor Nguyen Van Thang confirmed that the new paint finish is the same as the church’s old coat of paint. The current paint layer has a structure consisting of: paint, waterproof paint, color paint and antique 3D paint.
After the new paint was finished, many people admired the intact beauty of this work. “When you look at the new paint, but still the same, it gives an old feeling when you look at the church…” said Ms. Lan, who lives near the Hanoi Cathedral.
“Currently, the repair of the church is not completed, there are still some repairs on the inside such as the tower column, the dial is not working, the road around the church is paved with stone and has not been done. The stone part in front of the church facade will also have to be renewed…”, says priest Nguyen Van Thang.
The dial on the facade of the church is still under repair.
The motto of the Archdiocese of Hanoi in renovating this work is to try to restore, restore, not demolish or alter the architecture in order to preserve the values of the times as much as possible. Therefore, the process of restoring the appearance of the cathedral is carried out meticulously and carefully in order to get as close as possible to the old appearance.
Pastor Nguyen Van Thang said the repair was also reported to the local government this time and only repaired damaged and degraded parts, did not renew or change the structure. Estimated repair budget is about 10 billion VND.
The cathedral has a length of 64.5 m, a width of 20.5 m and two bell towers 31.5 m high with large stone pillars that weigh four corners, on the top is a stone cross.
This work is also known as Hanoi Cathedral or Saint Joseph’s Church, inaugurated in 1887, with European medieval Gothic architectural style. This is one of the places that tourists should definitely visit when they come to Hanoi.
