KARACHI, PAKISTAN – Media Outreach Newswire – February 26, 2024 – Roche Diabetes Care Pakistan (Roche) and social enterprise Greenstar Social Marketing (Guarantee) Limited (Greenstar) are pleased to announce a milestone for the ScreenHer initiative, which enables women in rural and peri-urban areas to access diabetes risk assessment, education and testing that would otherwise be difficult to obtain. In 70 clinics spread across six major cities, nearly 20,000 screenings were carried out.
Pakistan would be one of the top three countries in the world with the highest age-adjusted diabetes prevalence in the world in 2021.[1]. In Pakistan, 1 in 4 adults, or approximately 33 million, suffer from this life-threatening chronic disease.[2]. More importantly, the majority of the diabetic population remains undiagnosed and 400,000 people lost their lives to diabetes-related complications in 2021 alone.[3]. Women in particular are more vulnerable due to various socio-economic reasons that limit their knowledge and access to health services. More than half of women in APAC have little or no knowledge of diagnostic methods[4]leading to lower engagement and ultimately lower testing rates.
The ScreenHer initiative is a partnership between Roche and Greenstar that combines an extensive network of Greenstar clinics and Roche’s knowledge and expertise to reach more than one million women over a three-year period. Under ScreenHer, diabetes clinics or wellness centers provide end-to-end diabetes screening, diagnosis and management for women living in rural and peri-urban areas of Pakistan. Roche also supports training Greenstar employees in their clinics on diabetes management, contributing to efforts to build a skilled healthcare workforce to serve the community.
Dr Syed Azizur Rab
said“Access to quality health care remains a challenge in many parts of Pakistan, especially for women. For various reasons and cultural norms, women find it even more difficult to access health services needed for screening diabetes and get support in managing their diabetes. This leads to poor outcomes for women living with diabetes or who have not yet been screened for a diagnosis.
“Achieving this milestone is a testament to the collective efforts of our dedicated team, our partners and the communities we serve. We are committed to expanding healthcare and diabetes management services to Pakistan’s underserved populations, one screening at a time, at Sabz Sitara Clinic. at the national level,” added Dr. Rab.
Pedro Goncalves, Global Head of Sales Organization, Roche Diabetes Care, said“Roche is committed to tackling the global diabetes epidemic by collaborating with like-minded partners in Pakistan and other low- and middle-income countries. Thousands of pregnancies are affected by gestational diabetes each year in Pakistan, where the prevalence rate can vary by 17%[5] at 36.8%[6], many of which lead to maternal and fetal complications. Through ScreenHer, we are working to reduce inequalities in women’s health by enabling a holistic, patient-centered approach that allows women living with diabetes in Pakistan to experience real relief. »
By 2026, the number of clinics under ScreenHer will more than double to 250. The partnership between Roche and Greenstar will also generate crucial local data, which can be used to inform future health management policies and interventions. diabetes.
