6 ways to keep your business equipment in pristine condition

The success of one company can be attributed to many different factors. Productivity, teamwork, motivation and efficiency are often cited as some of the main contributing factors. However, it is safe to say that none of these important conditions can be successfully achieved if your employees are limited by faulty, misused or outdated equipment.

If we want to help our employees reach their full potential, we need to equip them with equipment and tools that can keep up with them. Then let’s take a look at some helpful tips that should help you keep your business equipment in top shape and empower your employees to do what they do best without obstacles.

    Introducing Lean Manufacturing Principles

If you’re unfamiliar with the term, lean manufacturing principles mainly involve maximizing the potential of your equipment and doing more with less. One of their main focuses is reducing waste in the form of time, workspace, movement or resources. In this way, possible weaknesses of your equipment are compensated for by more streamlined and better organized production methods. Your efforts should primarily focus on:

    • More efficient workflow management
    • iterative development
    • Optimize production system
    • Eliminating excess inventory, idling, defective products, wasted processing, underutilized tools, etc.

    Prioritize return on investment (ROI)

Some companies spend countless years without performing an audit to point out outdated procedures, equipment and technologies. Therefore, they tend to experience major drops in performance and continue to pump money into processes that are no longer viable. So your goal here is to identify the manufacturing instances that have the biggest impact on your company’s overall ROI and put your money and effort there. Once the investment starts to return, you have the option to focus on other less productive areas or ditch outdated tools altogether.

Introduce weekly and monthly inspection and maintenance

Most problems that eventually turn into major failures can easily be tackled at the root if you simply pay more attention to inspection and maintenance. For example, corroded iron, steel and copper, which can have a huge impact on the efficiency of your equipment, can only be successfully prevented with sulfatreat h2s removal equipment if the indicators are caught early. That’s why you should assign your employees weekly and monthly inspection and maintenance tasks so that these minor problems can be noticed and fixed before they grow into much more serious problems.

Train your staff to use the equipment properly

This goes without saying, but by using the equipment in an efficient way, the lifespan can be extended considerably. With that in mind, we have to admit that once we discover some ways that produce the most immediate or the most convenient results, we settle for those ways and stop exploring other production options. Going through equipment manuals, finding new ways to organize shifts to avoid putting too much pressure on equipment over time, and setting relevant KPIs can point to new, efficient and much more economical production methods.

Specialize in your business and cut out the rest

One of the biggest challenges in keeping the business equipment in top condition is collecting sufficient resources for such projects. We previously suggested focusing on the production nodes that yield the most return. In this section we propose to go one step further and completely outsource all departments that are not directly involved in the production process. Not only does this move reduce maintenance, maintenance, and upgrade costs associated with these facets, it also makes your business much more agile and helps you focus on the processes that generate the most revenue. If you run a machine shop, you should focus on providing quality services including CNC milling, turning, lasering and waterjet cutting services and have a separate dropshipping service to handle the shipment.

Explore standardization, good manufacturing practices and quality control

All of these methods are designed to make your production leaner, faster and more efficient, and to eliminate errors that can impact the performance and durability of your equipment. Of the three, you should put more emphasis on GMP or Good Manufacturing Practices which provide a set of detailed guidance on the following topics:

    • Quality management
    • Treatment of raw materials
    • Maintenance of buildings and facilities
    • Equipment Handling
    • Validation and Qualification
    • Documentation and Archiving
    • Organizing staff
    • Training to work in accordance with applicable laws and regulations

Of course, for these measures to take effect, they must be applied to all corporate entities. Therefore, the implementation must be accompanied by extensive training and education actions for employees.

We hope these few suggestions will help you get a general idea of the steps you can take to keep your business equipment in top shape and achieve greater levels of efficiency in the process. Most people try to solve these problems by doing more inspection and maintenance activities. But they only cure the symptoms and not the cause of the disease. If you want to put your business on a sound foundation, you have to start from the ground up.
