BEIJING, October 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — In Hinggan League, north China, a hydrogen and biomass-to-methanol production project using green energy recently completed technical testing of biomass gasification.
Under the testimony of industry experts, the first feed materials for its gasification furnace have proven that the biomass gasification technique, at the heart of the project, is reliable under different operating conditions.
With successful testing, the official commissioning of the first phase of the world’s largest green methanol production project in Hinggan League in the northeastern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is fast approaching.
In a notable breakthrough in the green methanol production sector, the first phase of the project was invested by a local green energy company under a subsidiary of Goldwind Science & Technology, representing a total investment of 2.296 billion yuan.
Capable of producing 250,000 tonnes of green methanol per year, the first phase of the project is expected to provide a reliable source of large-scale green methanol supply for the global shipping industry and downstream sectors.
Currently, green and low-carbon fuels, such as green methanol, are a priority for global shipping giants keen to accelerate the green transformation.
The project, which adopts environmentally friendly devices, appears to be a strong pillar for the green methanol purchase agreements signed between Goldwind Science & Technology and global shipping giants Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, respectively.
With the reliable and tested biomass gasifier technique, the Hinggan League administrative office recently won investment agreements for the second and third phases of the project from the above-mentioned subsidiary of Goldwind Science & Technology.
Since the beginning of the year, the associated expansion projects are expected to enter construction, and after their official commissioning, the overall production capacity of the project is expected to reach 1.45 million tonnes per year.
Located in a region with rich wind resources, the project harnesses wind power to produce green hydrogen and local corn stalks and other biomass to produce green methanol, thereby contributing to the construction of the “green hydrogen-ammonia-methanol” demonstration base of the Hinggan League.
