Android Auto looks set to get a whole new batch of apps, with Google opening the door a little wider when it comes to software designed to run on your dashboard. The company is now allowing navigation, parking, and charging apps to publish in the Google Play store, giving the smartphone projection system a much-needed injection of fresh functionality. Android Auto – not to be confused with the similarly-named Android Automotive OS – runs on an Android smartphone, but projects an interface which takes over the display in compatible vehicle infotainment systems. That way, you get access to Android apps,…

Samsung may offer its powerhouse Galaxy S series and stylish Galaxy A series in the US, but it seems we may be missing out on maximum battery life compared to users in other markets. At least, that’s the clear takeaway from the new Samsung Galaxy F12, freshly announced with a whopping 6,000 mAh battery. By way of comparison, the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G has a 5,000 mAh battery, and that was already sizable. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 – which has two displays to run – makes do with 4,500 mAh. Weirdly, then, Samsung isn’t making particularly grand promises for…

Yahoo has quietly announced that it will shutter its Yahoo Answers platform this summer, redirecting users to the Yahoo homepage and scrubbing its vast user-submitted archives from the Internet. Yahoo revealed the decision to shut down Yahoo Answers using a banner placed at the top of the website. The notice, which was first spied by The Verge, notes that this is the only change coming to Yahoo at this time and that…

Apple’s upcoming iMac refresh is expected to super-size the display, with more leaks underscoring an increase in panel size is on the cards for the new all-in-one. Believed to be in the pipeline for later in 2021, the new iMac looks set to mark the further expansion of Apple Silicon, the company’s homegrown chips. It’s certainly been some time since the iMac as we know it today was significantly updated. The last refresh came in mid-2020, though that only affected internal components, with new Intel processors among other changes. The external design, though, and the two screen sizes – 21.5-inches…

Apple CEO Tim Cook has talked about Apple car rumors, augmented reality, and the electric vehicle segment and his contact – or lack of – with Tesla’s Elon Musk, amid speculation by analysts that the Cupertino firm is readying a handful of ambitious launches into new categories over the next few years. Though Cook is, as always, tight-lipped about details and exact product plans, it’s clear that Apple isn’t interested in a low-key role in either AR or autonomous driving. They’re two segments around which rumors have long been circulating about Apple’s potential launches. On the one hand, the company…

Oracle has lost its challenge to hold Google liable for copyright infringement, with the Supreme Court ending more than a decade of legal sparring over some of the key components of Android. The case dates back to 2010, with Oracle arguing that Google had copied Java APIs that belonged to Sun Microsystems – which Oracle purchased – as it developed Android, and as such was liable for $8.8 billion in damages. Google, interestingly, did not deny that it had used the APIs when it first developed Android. However, it argues that their implementation counted as fair use, and as such…

LG may be shutting down its phone business, but that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck if you’ve been waiting for an Android 12 update – assuming Google’s release schedule matches up with LG’s closing plans. Announced late on Sunday, the South Korean firm bowed to years of pressure – and an almost equal period of speculation – and confirmed that it would be pulling out of the smartphone business in order to focus on other, more profitable fields. It was arguably an overdue move. LG’s other business divisions had a reasonably positive 2020, the company’s most recent financial results…

Even with the advent of smartwatches, smart fitness bands, which have been around before those smart timepieces, have continued to thrive. Beyond software differences, smart bands have always been distinguished by smaller or at least narrow displays compared to the circular or square screens of smartwatches. There have been a few outliers, of course, and Huawei’s latest fitness tracker is one of them. The Huawei Band 6 has a tall but large display that, unless you’re looking closely, could easily be mistaken for a smartwatch. Granted, the line that separates smartwatches from smart bands can be arbitrary, especially for brands…

Back when the iPhone X first came out, the notch design was still highly contested and criticized. Today, people have moved on to punch-hole cutouts that make the usual notches look almost like a blast from the past. All through the years, Apple hasn’t steered away from its original design, almost to the point of looking dated. With the iPhone 13 series, however, Apple is rumored to be changing things just a bit and this latest leak reveals how much smaller that notch will be. Notches have become a necessary evil for iPhone users. More than just an old design,…

The ongoing pandemic has thrown everything including product launches in the tech industry off schedule. Apple has not escaped untouched either – its usual March event didn’t transpire and there is no official word on whether Apple is going to go ahead with an event in April. Even though it’s loudly advocated that the Cupertino giant will be announcing some interesting products in an event this spring. In spite of a rough last year, Apple launched some groundbreaking devices in 2020 including the 5G iPhone 12s, refined Apple Watch, and the radical new M1 chip-powered Macs. This year, when Apple…
