Unhackable computer? Do they exist? A CPU is mostly considered as “the brain” of the computer, just like the brains of human beings, as they are responsible for both receiving and executing commands. Like the rest of the computer, however, the CPU does have its vulnerabilities.

    Unhackable Computer: Morpheus CPU

An article ON Medium talks more about how the CPU functions as the brain of A computer, and since it is the brain, it is very important for CPUs not to get hacked. This is why, according to the story by Gizmodo, a University of Michigan academic research team is reportedly working on some sort of way in order to stop certain attacks from taking place. This is according to the IEEE Spectrum. Todd Austin, the leading computer scientist, notes that the team is working on something called the Morpheus CPU.

The Morpheus CPU is basically an unhackable computer; recent tests of this computer processor show that its defences are, in fact, effective. During a recent virtual bug bounty program that was sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency or DARPA, an army of 580 White Hat hackers had spent a total of 13,000 hours all trying to attempt to beat the unhackable computer processor’s defenses.

How does the Morpheus CPU Protect Itself?

IEEE reports that Austin has described the team’s creation as the Morpheus CPU was designed over at the University of Michigan, making the computer chip into a puzzle that happens to compute. The idea is to make the computer processing unit “really hard” to exploit work from. Generally, the concept was for them to make the computer incredibly mind-bogglingly terrible to understand in order to discourage hackers from trying to target the computer.

According to Gizmodo, for those wondering how the Morpheus CPU is hacked, basically, the answer is encryption. Austin reveals that his team is actually using a cipher which is a particular algorithm that initiates encryption and encryption. The cipher is called “Simon.”

What Makes the Morpheus CPU Different?

In this case, whatever Simon says will go. This would then make the underlying implementation of the machine, namely the unhackable CPU, change every few hundred milliseconds. In other words, the computer processor is constantly encrypting parts of the Morpheus CPU functions in order to obscure how it actually works.

Due to the constant encryption, the Morpheus CPU blocks any potential hackers from being able to exploit the machine. In effect, the reconfiguration “key bits” of the computer processors’ code and data a number of times per second then turning any vulnerabilities into eventual dead ends for any hacker. This was according to the school’s engineering department.

The unhackable computer makes use of encryption in order to hide what possible vulnerabilities the hacker could try to exploit. The concept is due to the consistent encryptions, hackers won’t be able to keep up, and while they solve one, the computer is already a number of steps ahead.
