Da Nang has around 4,900 surveillance cameras in public places, but only 1,500 of them are working.
At a meeting with the city’s People’s Council on Thursday, members of the public asked the city to check and repair the broken cameras.
Nguyen Dai Dong, deputy director of the municipal police, said that of the 1,500 cameras still functioning, only 526 have good image quality.
But there are no funds to regularly repair or maintain the cameras, he said.
Police urged city authorities to maintain working cameras and repair those at strategic locations to ensure security, he said.
In September, the People’s Council approved a project to upgrade the operations center and public camera system for traffic safety.
It is expected to be achieved by 2026 with the installation of cameras capable of facial and license plate recognition and automatic alerts.
