Video footage shared on TikTok shows a glass panel shattering on the suspension bridge in Central Java, Indonesia, as a group of tourists walk on October 25, 2023.
Indonesian police arrested Edi Suseno, owner and manager of a glass bridge in Central Java province, after a glass panel shattered on the bridge, killing a tourist.
He was charged with negligence following the fatal accident. A conviction could carry a maximum sentence of five years in prison under Indonesian criminal law, Jakarta Post reported Wednesday, citing Banyumas City Police Chief Edy Suranta Sitepu.
Investigators determined that the 63-year-old director personally designed the glass bridge without required authorization and also failed to follow operational standards and safety regulations.
The glass floor of the broken bridge measured only 1.2 cm, police said, according to the Job.
The moss on the glass deteriorated over time and no information signs or visitor notices were found at the entrance to the glass bridge, investigators said.
The 32-foot-high suspension bridge is a popular tourist attraction in the Limpakuwus Pine Forest, located in Banyumas Regency in Central Java.
The accident occurred on October 25 while a group of tourists were walking on the bridge, Straits Times reported.
Two of the victims fell to the ground when the bridge’s glass panels shattered. One of them was pronounced dead, while the other suffered minor injuries.
Two other tourists managed to cling to the framework of the bridge.
Following the accident, many tourism experts called on the Indonesian government to reconsider building similar tourist attractions to ensure the safety of tourists.
